M. Salim Khan (born 1951), better known as Hakim M. Salim Khan, is a British scholar in natural medicine, particularly within the Unani Tibb tradition.[1] He is widely recognized as an international authority on natural medicine and is a qualified herbalist, nutritionist, naturopath, and iridologist with over 45 years of experience. Khan is the director of Mohsin Health Clinic and Mohsin Health Products.[2]
Khan is the founding director and principal of the College of Medicine and Healing Arts, Leicester, UK. Khan has authored several influential works on Islamic medicine, including "Islamic Medicine" (1986), "The Golden Key to Discovering Yourself" (2018), and "Islamic Medicine: An Introduction (2023).”
Khan conducts programs like "Healing Minds and Emotions through Ilm-un-Nafsiyat," focusing on holistic healing for the mind, body, and soul. Over the years, Khan has become a pivotal figure in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), influencing global perspectives on alternative healthcare. He is a member of various professional bodies, including the International Register for Consultant Herbalists (IRCH), the International Association of Natural Medicine (IANM), and the Guild of Naturopathic Iridologists International.
Early life and education
Khan was born and raised in Momanpur, Punjab, Pakistan, within the agriculturally rich Chachh Valley along the Indus River. Growing up on a family farm, he was exposed to organic farming practices and seasonal crop cultivation. He studied at the local village school and later continued at the Senior Burn Hall School in Abbottabad.
In 1970, Khan was introduced to Tibb Medicine, beginning his studies under notable figures such as Moulana Nisaar Ahmed, Sayyed Shabeer Hussain, and Hakeem Mohammed Nabi Khan. This exposure led to his early interest in natural health and medicine.
Khan trained in herbal medicine and osteopathy with the General Council and Register of Consultant Medical Herbalists (now IRCH). Khan was elected president of the same organization from 2013 until 2018.
In 1978, during his clinical training for an herbal medicine diploma, Khan was introduced to iridology by David Chapman, leading him to pursue a diploma in iridology in September 1996 from the School of Iridology and Holistic Healing. Subsequently, he also served as a clinical tutor at the same institution.
Dr. Bernard Jensen, a pioneer in American iridology, influenced Khan's approach to iridology. He received a certificate of merit in iridology and nutrition from Dr. Jensen in May 1982.
In 1991, Khan was conferred a Doctor of Medicine - Alternative (Medicina Alternativa) degree by the Open International University of Complementary Medicine (OIUCM).
Career
In 1978, Hakim Salim M. Khan founded Mohsin Health Clinic in Leicester, UK, specializing in natural medicine and Tibb, focusing on holistic healing. With over 45 years of experience, the clinic offers consultations where Khan utilizes his expertise as an herbalist, nutritionist, naturopath, and iridologist to assess individuals. The clinic emphasizes restoring health through natural treatments and addressing the whole person for overall well-being. Over the years, Khan has successfully treated numerous patients from diverse backgrounds and communities, emphasizing a holistic approach and natural medicaments and therapies. His diagnostic methods include pulse assessment and iridology, enabling the early detection of illnesses.
In 2008, Khan's sons established Mohsin Health Products to make herbal and natural health remedies accessible to a wider audience. The product range includes herbal medicines, food-based supplements, books, herbal teas, and immune support products.
Additionally, Khan is the founding director of the College of Medicine and Healing Arts, Leicester, UK, a renowned international college offering professional diploma programs and online public health education combined with coaching.
Khan holds presidency positions in several professional bodies, including the International Association of Natural Medicine (IANM). Khan is a trustee of the World Unani Foundation. He also serves as president of the Guild of Naturopathic Iridologists International.
In 2022, Khan initiated the Revival of Prophetic Medicine initiative to utilize the wisdom and legacy of Prophet Muhammad to address contemporary health challenges.
As a published author, Khan has released three books: "Islamic Medicine" (1986), "The Golden Key to Discovering Yourself" (2018), and "Islamic Medicine: An Introduction (2023).”[3]
Throughout his career, Khan has actively engaged in conferences, seminars, workshops, and courses related to Unani Tibb, health, and natural medicine globally, including India, Pakistan, Turkey, Spain, Morocco, the UK, and the USA. He has also been featured in various media outlets, including BBC documentaries, the Türkiye channel, Diyanet TV, UK newspapers such as the Leicester Mercury and the Daily Mail, and journals such as Resurgence, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, and Qaumi Sehat of Pakistan. On February 11, 2019, Khan gave a keynote presentation titled ‘Unani Tibb for Public Health’ at Parliament Quarters (London, UK).
Khan has initiated health-related programs in multiple countries and has been appointed as an 'Expert' for the 'Sheikh Zayed International Awards.’ Since 2009, he has also been a member of the "International Advisory Board" for the CCRUM, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India's "Hippocratic Journal of Unani Medicine."
