Jason van Wyk (born January 10, 1990) is a South African composer and music producer based in Cape Town.

Biography

Van Wyk started producing techno and trance music during his early teenage years, with the majority of these works being released through Black Hole Recordings after signing with them in 2009.[1] During this time, he collaborated with and remixed artists such as BT_(musician)|BT[2], Kirsty Hawkshaw, JPL, Audien, Signum[3], Kirsty Bertarelli, Stephen J. Kroos, John_O'Callaghan_(musician)|John O’Callaghan and First State. These releases gained support from the likes of Armin van Buuren[4], Paul van Dyk[5], Paul Oakenfold[6], Above & Beyond[7], Cosmic Gate[8], Max Graham[9], ATB[10] and Tiesto[11], with appearances on radio programs such as A State of Trance[12] and the In Search of Sunrise[13] compilation CD series. His collaboration in 2011 with Canadian producer Audien, titled Someday, was singled out by Mixmag in their review for its “equally flawless” production and melody work[14].

2013 saw the release of van Wyk’s first solo album Days You Remember.[15] The album was a departure from his previously established sound[16], taking influence from abstract electronic music, post-classical and ambient. Tilllate Magazine described the album in their review as “emotional, melancholic and cinematic” while awarding it a rare 10/10.[17]

Van Wyk’s second album Attachment[18] was released in 2016 and subsequently reissued together with his third album Opacity in 2017 on the UK label Home Normal.[19] Described as “environmental chamber music” in Rockerilla’s review of Opacity[20], both albums consisted of minimal compositions for piano, chamber strings and electronics interlaced with field recordings.

In November 2018 it was announced that van Wyk had signed to the American label n5MD[21]. His fourth album, and first on the label, Threads[22] was released in July 2021.[23][24] A darker, experimental electronic album; Threads was described as a return to form in some ways, going back to atmospheric beat-driven production and making use of heavier synthesiser parts.[25]

Besides his releases, van Wyk has composed for various film and media projects. These include the feature film Triggered[26][27], released through Samuel Goldwyn Films in 2020[28], as well as brands such as The Criterion Collection[29], Taschen[30], LinkedIn and Netflix[31]. He has also worked as an additional music composer within in the film industry as well as a sound designer in conjunction with Roland and their subsidiary Virtual Sonics.[32][33][34][35]
