Habtamu Lamu (Born 15 January 1978) is an Oromo people Ethiopian singer and a late night show host at Qaanqe Show. He gained popularity in 2009 with the release of his debut album, Kommee. Habtamu’s music is influenced by musical styles including Afrobeats.

Life and career

Early life

Habtamu was born in Wollega, Kober, Ethiopia, on 15 January 1978 to his father Shiferaw Lamu and his mother Alami Sirika. He is the Oldest of eight children in the family. Immediately after migrating to Canada from his refugee life in Kenya, he started performing Afrobeats, hip hop and reggae in Toronto night clubs. In 2008, Habtamu went to Alberta, Canada and worked as a limousine company owner and operator in Grand Prairie.[1]

Career

In 2009, Habtamu Lamu released his first album, Kommee, and joined the Oromo Ethiopian music industry. Habtamu continued producing new songs and released one more albums: Siin Bulee in 2012. After taking some time off to setup a restaurant business and a charity initiative in Alberta[2][3], Habtamu made a comeback with a new Oromo Late Night Show entitled Gingilchaa in 2018. This show, which started in 2018, is one of the most popular shows in the Oromo media landscape. In years 2013, 2015 and 2016, he released Shegoyye, "Wallagga Daawwanna"[4] and a duet "Ani Sanyii Leencaati" and "Egereen Keenya"[5] with Hirphaa Gaanfure consecutively. He also realeased a single commemorating Hachalu Hundessa "Dacheen Kunis Garaa Jabaatte".[6] The song went viral on social Media.[7][8]

Personal life

Habtamu lives in Edmonton, Canada. He has been married to Iftu Warate since 2006. They have two children.
