Francesc Mates Gil [1] (born 6 april 1930) was an athlete, pioneer in shoemaking sport shoes, Marathon runner, athletics coach, sports photographer, and the first promoting Orienteering races in Catalonia [2]

Personal life

Francesc Mates was a creative and polifacetic man, a sports leader in many senses. In 1947 created the MaTeS brand, specialised in design and handmade manufacturing of sport shoes, mainly track and field shoes, and handball shoes as well, among many other kinds of sneakers. He was a prominent provider of the best teams of 20th century teams, like Futbol Club Barcelona, Atlético Madrid (handball). Later, he made special shoes to basketball players like Roberto Dueñas[3]

He was cofounder of the Marathon Catalunya commission - promoter of Barcelona Marathon-, the orienteering club Club Orientació Catalunya and the federation of orienteering races of Catalonia Federació de Curses d'Orientació de Catalunya, being its first vice president as well.

In 1992, the federation Federació Catalana d’Orientació Esportiva awarded him with the annual trophy named Francesc Mates as a memorial of his role in the promotion of this sport in Catalonia since 1988.

In 1993, the local government of Catalonia Generalitat de Catalunya awarded him with the medal Forjador de la Història Esportiva de Catalunya.

In 1981 created the 15.5 km race Cursa de l’Amistat, perhaps one of the best long distance urban races of Barcelona. The starting point was placed at the summit of Montjuïc, the hill overlooking the harbour where the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys is placed. The finishing line was at the summit of the Tibidabo mountain. From 1991 to the last edition, in 2019, was known as the Francesc Mates Memorial [4]
