In the United States, the marathon is a long-distance foot event with a distance of 42.195 kilometres (26 miles 385 yards). It is commonly raced on roads, although it may also be completed on trail routes. Running the marathon or using a run/walk plan are both viable options for completing it. There are also sections for those who use wheelchairs. Every year, more than 800 marathons are hosted across the globe, with the great majority of competitors being recreational athletes. Larger marathons, which may attract tens of thousands of people, attract a smaller number of competitors.

The marathon was one of the first modern Olympic events, taking place in 1896 in Athens, Greece. It wasn't until 1921 that the distance was officially established. As of 1983, the distance is also a part of the World Athletics Championships, which are held every four years. It is the only road race that is featured in both championship contests that is conducted on the road (walking races on the roads are also contested in both).
