Dr. Philip Baldeo is a board-certified licensed family physician who has been in active continual medical practice for 35 years on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.[1] He has been in active family practice in Richmond Hill, Jamaica Queens New York doctor at the same location he started 28 years ago after leaving the prestigious Jackson Memorial Hospital which is affiliated with University of Miami. He successfully completed his Residency in Family Practice at the same time securing his Florida Medical License in the first year of Residency Training. This allowed him to gain enormous medical experience as a attending physician working in the Urgent Care Department of Jackson Memorial Level I Trauma Centre. His three earlier years of General Surgery Residency Training at University of the West Indies were priceless in the ER in differentiating surgical versus non-surgical medical issues especially in the emergency room. When he moved to New York in 1994 he started as a Emergency Room MD and Clinical Director in Family Practice Residency Program. However, this was short lived as his Family Practice grew exponentially and consumed all his time in patient care, over 80+ hours per week.[2]

Early life and education

Philip Baldeo was born in the Amazon Rain Forest in an impoverished third world country called British Guyana with a total population of less than 700,000 person of which over 75% illiterate and per capita income of less than $350 USD and possibly second only to Haiti as one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, maybe the world. There was no University in Guyana and neither did any of his relatives ever attended University abroad, much less studied Medicine. He was fortunate to have received a scholarship to study Pre-med at University of Toronto and received a BSc distinction before studying Medicine at the University of the West Indies which was the premiere and only learning /teaching institution for the 6+ million persons in the Caribbean. It was a very competitive environment which was healthy for the brightest minds to excel and the less brilliant could not afford to be complacent. It was almost as if it were a monasterial pursuit to learn the Pre-clinical Sciences of Medicine prior to the Clinical Sciences. The Professors were equally as motivated to impart their knowledge and helped to groom the young medical students, some of whom are Professors and Faculty Heads in USA and Canada.

Career

After 3 years Pre Med and 5 years Medial School Dr. Baldeo was finally able to earn a salary and afford to buy a used car. Completed 2 years of a Comprehensive Rotating Internship with many hours of moon lighting in the Emergency Room to improve his clinical skills and diagnostic acumen in favorable Medical Teaching environments of the Port of Spain General Hospital in Trinidad and University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. As he reflects on his over 30+ years of active medical practice in USA, Dr. Baldeo believes that the experience was invaluable in developing the confidence that one need to survive the grueling Medical landscape in USA and worse in the diverse demanding Metropolis of New York City especially in Private Family Practice .The physical and mental strain of patient is compounded by the demands of the bureaucracy of the medical establishment in large cities.[3]

Philanthropy

Dr. Baldeo is very active in non-profit work with his home country of Guyana and other regions of the Caribbean. His main passion is creating safe havens for battered women and kids and hopefully one day able to expand these to providing medical care and a basic education. Guyana is still a poor nation despite the recent discovery of oil and Dr. Baldeo donates his time and money to help build homes for the underprivileged people there.[4]

In 2022, Dr Baldeo launched the Dr Philip Baldeo Scholarship for Future Medical Doctors, where he provides scholarship funding for a deserving student who is studying medicine.[5][6]
