Dr. Sunil Kalda (born July 1, 1958) is an Indian plastic surgeon who specializes in burn, cosmetic, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgeries. He holds a Golden Book of World Records for the most free cleft surgeries performed. He runs a private surgery practice, Kalda Hospital, in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, and is in charge of the Kalda Burn & Plastic Surgery Center in Raipur. Dr. Kalda is also the director of the project “Smile Train.”[1]

Dr. Kalda is the Chairman of the IPA (Indian Podiatry Association) Chhattisgarh Chapter. An authority in plastic, cosmetic, and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Kalda has received numerous accolades, including the "Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Samman," “Dr. B C Roy Award,” "Vihan Samman," "Emerging Chhattisgarh," and "Gaurav Award Mumbai."[2]

Early life and education

Dr. Kalda was born and raised in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India. He graduated from Kalibadi School, Raipur, and obtained her MBBS and master's in general surgery from Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur, in 1982 and 1985, respectively. In 1989, Dr. Kalda obtained a Master of Chirurgiae from Safdarjang Hospital, Delhi, and a D.N.B. in plastic surgery in 1990 in Mumbai.

Career

Dr. Kalda started his medical career in 1990 by establishing his clinic at Raipur Hospital, Kacheri Chowk. Four years later, in 1994, he initiated independent practice within a hospital setting and has since amassed over 35 years of experience across various hospitals and clinics.

Dr. Kalda is the founder and director of Kalda Burn and Plastic Surgery Center, Raipur, a 150-bed multi-specialty institution that specializes in burn, plastic, aesthetic, reconstructive, cosmetic, hair transplant, sex reassignment, and various other surgeries.[3]

Dr. Kalda is a pioneer in laser surgery, microvascular surgery, craniofacial surgery, ear reconstruction, re-implant surgery, and cancer reconstructive surgery. He has performed over 175,000 operations at his facility, treating national and international patients.

Dr. Kalda has performed over 70,000 complimentary surgeries, including 27,000 operations addressing cleft lip and palate anomalies, earning him the esteemed "Golden Book of World Records" accolade.

Dr. Kalda also leads various government initiatives and projects, including "Operation Muskan," a campaign endorsed by the government of Chhattisgarh in 2010–11 aimed at eradicating cleft conditions within the state. He is the director of the project “Smile Train.” Dr. Kalda has conducted over 200 free camps in the remote and hard-to-reach Naxal-affected areas of Chhattisgarh.

Dr. Kalda's pioneering efforts in burn care have led to the establishment of a cutting-edge facility, the "Super Burn ICU," renowned for its lifesaving interventions, particularly for patients with severe burns that even exceed 90%.[4]

In 2010, Tahalka magazine conducted a national survey to recognize Dr. Kalda's contributions and the transformative effect of the "Kalda Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Institute Raipur" on community well-being.[5]

In addition to burn, cosmetic, and aesthetic plastic surgeries, Dr. Kalda has gained recognition for performing over 70 sex reassignment surgeries. He was featured in Forbes magazine's December 2018 edition, highlighting the journey of India’s first trans-Queen, Miss Veena Sendre. He is also known for spearheading several limb amputation prevention initiatives, positively impacting over 2,000 cases of diabetic foot complications.[6]

Dr. Kalda is the chairman of the Indian Podiatry Association (IPA). He is a member of several medical organizations, including the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Academy of Medical Sciences of Raipur. Dr. Kalda is a life member of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (APSI), a founding member of the Lymphology Society of India, and a member of the National Cosmetic Surgery Society.[7]

Since 2015, Kalda Burn and Plastic Surgery Center has received authorization for a skin bank from the Government of India and the Government of Chhattisgarh, facilitating the rehabilitation of acid attack survivors and extensive burn victims.

Awards and recognitions

  • Dr. Kalda has been recognized with the “Golden Book of World Records” for conducting the highest number of free cleft surgeries globally.
  • Dr. Kalda received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award from the Indian Medical Association in 2007.
  • He was credited with the Bharat Jyoti Award in 2011.
  • He has been recognized with the Vihan Samman by Zee News, the Emerging Chhattisgarh Award (2013), and the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Samman (2010) for serving the tribal populations of Chhattisgarh.
  • He has been recognized with the Gaurav Award in Mumbai for his excellence in cosmetic surgery.
