Dr. Orien Tulp is an American medical researcher, professor and author. He is the founder and president of the University of Science, Arts, and Technology located in Montserrat, British West Indies.[1][2][3]

Dr. Tulp earned a BS, MS, and Ph.D. from the University of Vermont. He specialized in Nutrition, Endocrinology, and Metabolism during his NIH-sponsored post-graduate studies at the Clinical Research Center of the University of Vermont College of Medicine.[4]

Dr. Tulp is a graduate of the Vermont Military Academy, and has had a long military career, being extensively awarded for military and humanitarian service.[5]

Dr. Tulp has a wife, Carla Konyk-Tulp, and they have two children together. He is a skiing and football enthusiast.

Military Service

Dr. Orien Tulp enlisted in the military at age 17. He earned the rank of Colonel before completing a combined 44 years of active, reserve, and National Guard duty, all while continuing in academia. Dr. Tulp has written about strategies for balancing military service and academia.[6]

Dr. Tulp has received several military awards, including the US Legion of Merit medal for exceptional meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. His other awards include: the US Army Meritorious Service Medal, the Order of Military Medical Merit (granted by the Surgeon General, USA), The US Army Commendation Medal with 7 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Garde du Nationale Trophy, (granted by the National Guard Association of the USA), and a Certificate of Appreciation for his medical support (granted by the International Military Sports Council).[7]

Academia

Dr. Tulp has served in several academic roles throughout his career, including a professorship at Drexel University in Philadelphia. He founded the University of Science, Arts, and Technology in Montserrat,[8][9][10] where he has delivered distinctive leadership for over two decades. Dr. Tulp has also provided mentorship for graduate students who are working toward their Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees.

Dr. Orien Tulp has conducted extensive research on obesity, metabolism, and diabetes. He has written hundreds of scientific papers, abstracts, and book chapters, including being one of the first contributors to Academia Biology in 2023. Additionally, he has served on the editorial boards of several professional journals.[11]

Dr. Tulp has lectured and authored papers on a wide variety of topics, including: medical nutrition, medical and biomedical research, endocrinology, metabolism, nutritional medicine, proper medical research and medical writing techniques, and the effects of globalization and technology on higher education. Two of his recent publications include: "Rembrandt Revisited: Advancements in Teaching Anatomy and Neurobiology in an Integrated Medical Curriculum in the 21st Century, "The British Journal of Healthcare and Medical Research, 2023; and "Nonshivering Thermogenesis Revisited: Sympathetic and Non-Sympathetic Contributions,” Medcrave, 2023.

Dr. Tulp is an active member of the Nutrition Society of the UK, the American Society for Nutrition, and the Association of American Physicians. He was recognized as a Fellow of the American Association for Higher Education.

Travel & Volunteer Work

Dr. Tulp has traveled extensively. He is passionate about the benefits of international travel and has written about how global travel can dispel stereotypes, broaden perspective, enhance foreign language learning, and boost cross-cultural empathy and understanding. Dr. Tulp promotes cultural immersion as an educational and personally enriching form of international travel. "Cultural immersion allows you to shed unconscious biases and prejudices, thereby enabling you to fully appreciate the richness of the community and peoples around you."[12]

Dr. Orien Tulp is a dedicated volunteer and has participated in many humanitarian and medical civic action missions in the USA and abroad. He was granted a Presidential Volunteer Service Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the White House, a Presidential Citation signed by President Clinton, and the Citizenship Medal, awarded by Sons of the American Revolution.
