Dr. Mostafa Elsayed Sherbiny Elsayed (born 2 November 1966), widely known as Ambassador Dr. Mostafa Sherbiny, is an Egyptian sustainability consultant, climate risk assessor, ESG expert, lead verifier, environmental strategist, and Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He is recognized for his contributions to sustainability governance, climate action, carbon neutrality, environmental management systems, and carbon footprint verification in the Arab region.[1]

Early life and education

Dr. Mostafa Sherbiny was born in Egypt, where he developed an early interest in environmental sustainability, institutional governance, and economic development. His academic background combines accounting, management sciences, environmental systems, and climate governance, which later shaped his professional work in sustainability and ESG transformation.

He graduated from the Faculty of Commerce at Cairo University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting. He later pursued advanced academic studies at the Sadat Academy for Administrative Sciences, obtaining a Higher Diploma in Environmental Management Systems in 2002 and a Higher Diploma in Management in 2004. He also received a Professional Doctorate from the National Center for Agricultural Research.

In addition to his academic qualifications, Dr. Sherbiny became a Certified Public Accountant accredited by the Egyptian Ministry of Finance for Joint Stock Companies under registration number S.S.M. 14776. He also completed professional studies in Financial Statement Analysis (FSA), sustainability systems, climate risk assessment, ESG governance, carbon footprint accounting, MRV systems, and international environmental standards.

His technical and professional certifications include Lead Auditor qualifications under IRCA and CQI for ISO 14001 and ISO 9001, as well as Lead Verifier and Independent Assurance accreditations recognized by EGAC and AIF.

Career

Dr. Sherbiny has more than 35 years of professional experience in sustainability consulting, ESG governance, climate risk assessment, carbon footprint management, and environmental auditing. Throughout his career, he has worked on sustainability transformation initiatives, climate governance systems, and environmental compliance programs across the Arab region.[2]

He serves as Chairman of the Scientific Chair for Sustainability and Carbon Footprint at ALECSO under the League of Arab States. He is also associated with the European Climate Pact as an ambassador promoting climate awareness and sustainability initiatives in Egypt and the wider Arab world.[3]

Dr. Sherbiny is the President of the Institute of Sustainability and Carbon Footprint LLC, which specializes in sustainability consulting, emissions accounting, MRV systems, ESG auditing, climate verification and validation, and executive capacity-building programs. Through this organization, he has led sustainability training programs and professional diplomas related to carbon accounting, climate governance, ESG reporting, CBAM implementation, and international climate frameworks.[4]

Over the course of his career, he has contributed to multiple international initiatives associated with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These initiatives include the Climate Ambassadors initiative, the Carbon Neutral Pioneers initiative, the Water Footprint Pioneers initiative, and the Auditors and Experts Initiative in Sustainability and Climate Risk Assessment.

Dr. Sherbiny has participated as a keynote speaker, lecturer, and sustainability expert at numerous international conferences, workshops, and forums focusing on climate change, sustainable finance, carbon markets, environmental governance, and institutional sustainability transformation. He has also led observer delegations at Conferences of the Parties (COP) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

He is recognized as the author of the eight-volume Carbon Neutrality Encyclopedia, comprising more than 3,000 pages and considered among the first comprehensive Arabic references dedicated to carbon neutrality, sustainability systems, and emissions management. His work also focuses on ISO 14064, ISO 14067, ISO 17029, ESG governance, climate verification, sustainable finance, and carbon market systems. He contributed to promoting CBAM awareness, ESG integration, carbon accounting systems, and climate-related financial disclosure practices in the Arab region.

Awards and recognition

In 2021, Dr. Sherbiny received the Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Medal for Best Voluntary Work in Sustainable Development together with the accompanying 10,000 prize. The award was presented by the League of Arab States, the Arab Union for Volunteering, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) in recognition of his contributions to sustainability and voluntary environmental initiatives.

He is also widely recognized for his pioneering contributions to sustainability governance, climate education, ESG integration, carbon neutrality, and climate awareness campaigns throughout the Arab region. His work in sustainability consulting and environmental advocacy has contributed to the promotion of low-carbon economic strategies and institutional sustainability transformation.
