Dr. Markesha Miller (born February 24, 1979) is an American psychotherapist, consultant, professor, coach, and speaker.[1] She is the owner and clinical director of Holistic Psychological Associates, providing counseling, consultation, and supervision services. She is an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina-Columbia and is the host of "On the Mark with Dr. Markesha Miller." Dr. Miller is the founder of the Marguerite C. Blackwell Foundation, a non-profit organization addressing mental health challenges in rural areas.[2]

Dr. Miller is the vice chair of the South Carolina Governor’s Juvenile Justice Advisory Council and has been appointed to the South Carolina Licensure Board for Licensed Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Psycho-Educational Specialists. She has authored columns on multicultural pedagogy in wellness and is a frequent speaker at national, regional, and state-wide events on topics such as multicultural education and challenges faced by women of color.[3]

Dr. Miller has been featured in prominent publications such as Cosmopolitan Magazine, Women's Health Magazine, InStyle Magazine, and The New York Times. Additionally, she has appeared on popular media platforms, including The Today Show, CNN, NBC, and various others.

Early life and education

Dr. Miller was born and raised in Monroe, North Carolina. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and psychology from the University of South Carolina in 2000. Subsequently, she obtained an Ed.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2003, followed by a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of South Carolina in 2010.

Dr. Miller also holds a certificate in women's entrepreneurship from Cornell University, completed in 2024.

Career

Dr. Miller is a licensed psychotherapist, consultant, and mental health media expert with over 20 years of experience in academia, research, practice, and consulting. She is the owner and clinical director of Holistic Psychological Associates,[4] where she provides counseling, consultation, and supervision services to a diverse clientele, including individuals, couples, marriage, and family counseling. Dr. Miller also offers concierge therapy for celebrity clients and wellness solutions for corporations and agencies.[5]

Dr. Miller is an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina-Columbia, teaching graduate courses in counselor education, supervision, marriage and family therapy, and multicultural counseling. She has previously held positions as an undergraduate coordinator and professor at Webster University and as a clinical coordinator at South University. In 2016, she joined The Center for Emotional and Behavioral Change as Vice President and Clinical Director.[6]

Dr. Miller is actively involved in community service, serving as a court-appointed special advocate (CASA) for fifteen years and presenting at conferences, universities, and media outlets. She is a media correspondent, motivational speaker, mental health first aid instructor, CEAP (Certified Employee Assistance Professional), and substance abuse professional (SAP). Dr. Miller has published articles on multicultural pedagogy and wellness and participates in national, regional, and state-wide presentations.[7]

Dr. Miller serves on various boards throughout South Carolina, including the South Carolina Governor’s Juvenile Justice Advisory Council and the South Carolina Licensure Board for Licensed Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Psycho-Educational Specialists.[8]

Dr. Miller is the founder of the Marguerite C. Blackwell Foundation, a non-profit organization providing mental health services, empowerment, and services for families and children in rural areas. She is the former host of Therapy Thursdays on WACH-TV 57 and currently hosts the syndicated radio show "On The Mark W/Dr. Markesha Miller," where she discusses mental health, wellness, and social justice issues.[9]

Dr. Miller is the author of "Hitting the Mark: Your Prescription for Good Mental Health," released in December 2021.[10][11]

In addition, Dr. Miller actively participates in beauty pageants as a judge, advocates for her community, and holds positions on various local and state boards. She served as the 2017 and 2018 Ms. South Carolina USA Ambassador and was recognized in 2017 as one of Columbia's 25 most stylish individuals. Dr. Miller has also been cast for Season 3 of OWN's "Greenleaf" and for a national print and commercial ad with Gentry Print.

Personal life

Dr. Miller resides in Columbia, South Carolina, with her husband, Samuel A. Fuller. During her free time, she enjoys writing, spending time with family, and traveling.
