Dr. James V. Hardt is an American research scientist, psychologist and author who is known for inventing the world’s first Micro-Computer-based brain wave analyzer and biofeedback system.[1] He is the founder of The Biocybernaut Institute that offers unique brain training programs in multiple locations including Sedona, Arizona, and Bavaria, Germany.[2] He has served the Carnegie Mellon University, University of California, National Institute of Mental Health and John E. Fetzer Foundation in a career spanning over two decades.[3][4]

Dr. Hardt is an expert in the study of the electrophysiological basis of advanced spiritual states and has traveled across the globe in pursuit of his research to study advanced Yogis and Zen Masters, with his technology.[5] He has worked with several renowned personalities like Tony Robbins along with other high-powered executives to elevate states of intelligence and consciousness for over 40-years.[6][7]

Dr. Hardt has authored several publications and patents along with his book The Art of Smart Thinking, which are a culmination of his avid research on how to elevate human consciousness.[8][9]

Early life and education

Dr. Hardt is a celebrated alumni of the Carnegie Institute of Technology and Carnegie Mellon University, where he studied for almost a decade. Dr. Hardt enrolled for a bachelor’s course in Physics in 1963. He then pursued his Masters Degree in Psychology, following a doctorate in the same, graduating with a Ph.D. in 1974.

Dr. Hardt also did Postdoctoral work, Interdisciplinary Training Program and research in Psychophysiology at the Langley Porter Neuro-Psychiatric Institute of the University of California at San Francisco. He has also studied Zen meditators and Zen masters, and explored Christian prayer and contemplation.

Career

Right after acquiring his bachelor’s degree, Dr. Hardt became a research assistant of Dr. Calvin Nodine who worked in the department of Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University. While pursuing his doctorate degree, Dr. Hardt assumed the roles of a system’s analyst and an instructor in Psychology for three years each.

1971 marked the beginning of Dr. Hardt’s Pre Doctoral Fellowship at the Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), where he worked for two years alongside Dr. Joe Kamiya researching psychophysiology and EEG feedback.

After completing his fellowship, Dr. Hardt assumed the role of a research associate at the University of California, where he worked with several institutes and Dr. Charles L. Yeager. Dr. Hardt contributed his services at EEG Systems Lab, Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute and UCSF Department of Psychiatry as a Computer Systems Analyst where he documented and evaluated a mini-computer system (DEC PDP-15) that was dedicated to power and coherence spectral analysis of EEG.

In 1975, Dr. Hardt commenced his postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), where he worked for two years alongside Dr. Joe Kamiya who was his preceptor. He continued his services at this institute for two years and then he wrote, won, and became a principal investigator for a large Federal Grant from the National Institute of Mental Health - NIMH working on Anxiety and Aging, studying the intervention in Anxiety and Aging with EEG Alpha Feedback.

After his pre-doctoral and post-doctoral services at the Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, Dr. Hardt joined the staff of the University of California, where he worked initially as a research psychologist for about a year and then assumed the role of an Assistant Adjunct Professor. Also during the same time he was a principal investigator on a grant funded for 12 years by the John E. Fetzer Foundation, working on long term training in Brain Energy feedback.

During Dr. Hardt’s time at the University of California, which he started in 1971, he received multiple research funds and scholarships to continue his work as a principal investigator which were:

Maco Stewart Scholarship and Research Fund - To study the effects of high blood pressure and recovery from heart bypass surgery with the Intervention of EEG Alpha Feedback. John E. Fetzer Foundation, Long Term Training in Brain Energy Feedback, July 1, 1977-July 31, 1989, ($950,000). US National Institute of Mental Health, Anxiety and Aging: Intervention with EEG Alpha Feedback. MH32612 July 1, 1979 - June 30, 1982, ($251,000).[10]

Maco Stewart Scholarship and Research Fund, High Blood Pressure and Recovery from Heart Bypass Surgery: Intervention with EEG Alpha Feedback, October 1, 1979 - June 30, 1982, ($250,000).

John E. Wertin Fund, Alpha Training to Reduce Executive Stress, December 23, 1980 - June 30, 1982, ($5,000).

Dr. Hardt completed the development of this world’s first micro-computer brain analyzer and feedback system in 1978 which was funded by John E. Fetzter Foundation. Dr. Hardt’s insights into how to train people to reach states of higher awareness are a result of his work with advanced Yogis in India, where he travelled after his discovery.

In late 1983, Dr. Hardt founded Biocybernaut Institute with an aim to offer cutting edge neurofeedback training in order to empower business founders and leaders. This venture of Dr. Hardt was to implement his idea of expanding the boundaries of western scientific exploration of the human brain.[11]
