Early life and education

Aboy was born on November 29, 1976, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to a military family. Soon after his birth, his parents, Marcelino and Heda Aboy, relocated to California, then to England, Germany, Indiana, and then back to California. Aboy holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from California State University, Fullerton.

At the age of 13, Aboy was once bullied at his school. Following this, he enrolled and learned Tae Kwon Do from his father’s co-worker. He soon started developing an interest in the sport and further learned additional styles such as Lima Lama (Polynesian Martial Art), wrestling, American kickboxing, and Jiu-Jitsu. At the age of 23, Aboy discovered Muay Thai and received his certification as a Muay Thai instructor from the World Thai Boxing Association, formerly known as the Thai Boxing Association of the U.S.A. He obtained his Muay Thai training under the supervision and guidance of professional Muay Thai champion Bryan “Double Dose” Dobler of California.

Career

U.S. Government

Following his graduation, Aboy landed a job with the federal government and moved to Georgia, then to Maryland, and later to Virginia. He has experience of over 20 years of working with his federal police agency, providing protection to high-level VIPs and traveling all over the world. He has spent five years as a police instructor at their academy teaching control tactics. He has taught at various national police conferences along with different police departments and federal police agencies. He currently serves as a federal law enforcement officer for the U.S. government for the past 20 years.[5]

Muay Thai instructor

Aboy founded T.A.G. Muay Thai in his two-car garage space in Herndon, Virginia, in October 2006. In 2009, he grew the establishment into an LLC and later moved to the Dullex Sportsplex in 2013. After shifting several times in 2020, Aboy finally established T.A.G. Muay Thai on May 2021 at its current space in Sterling, Virginia. At his T.A.G. Muay Thai Institute, Aboy teaches combative arts to students ranging from different age groups and skill levels. He is dedicated to developing a curriculum that ensures continuous development and learning of new skill sets.[6][7]

Aboy is an active member of the martial arts community and has continuous engagements in planning, setting, and hosting sparring exhibitions and seminars for the community and athletes. With a view to establishing uniformity throughout his gym, Aboy branded his equipment and gear, including shorts and T-shirts worn by his trainers and students, under the name “TAG Strikegear,” which he then rebranded to “Chok” in 2019.[9] Aboy’s equipment and gear can be purchased online from his website.[10]
