Christiana Wyly (born 1988) is an American environmental activist, sustainable entrepreneur, and philanthropist.[1] With a career spanning over two decades, she has contributed to various fields, including impact investment, food systems change, and documentary film production.[2]

Wyly is a partner and investor at Satori Capital, an impact investment firm where she champions sustainable investments. She is also the founder and chairwoman of the Unreasonable Group, an international company that supports growth-stage entrepreneurs addressing global challenges.[3]

Wyly advocates for sustainable food practices through the My Plate My Planet Initiative. She hosts the BBC podcast "Unreasonable Impact: Food Solutions." She is committed to philanthropic causes, particularly mental health, food justice, and sustainable food systems.[4]

As a keynote public speaker, Wyly has addressed audiences at various events worldwide, including the United Nations Climate Change Conferences and the Aspen Ideas Festival. Her impactful work has been recognized in publications such as The New York Times and The Dallas Morning News.

Early life and education

Wyly was born in 1988 in the United States as the daughter of Texas billionaire Sam Wyly. She was raised in her hometown by her parents, Sam Wyly and Rosemary Wyly, along with five siblings.

Wyly attended Goddard College, earning a bachelor’s degree in sustainability studies. She obtained a master's degree in food studies from the University of the Pacific in 2017. Additionally, she attended various universities to enhance her skills, including executive programming, leadership skills, and scenario planning for the future of food.

Career

Wyly has a career spanning two decades, where she has been involved in various fields, including environmental and social entrepreneurship, investment, nonprofit work, and foundation leadership.[5]

During her youth, Wyly's influence led to her father's interest in environmental education, prompting him to establish Green Mountain Energy, a prominent clean energy company globally. She was a founding partner in Green Mountain Energy until 2010, contributing to her experience in sustainability and clean energy.[6]

In 2005, she started as a board member at the Children's Health Foundation, where she spearheaded various child health initiatives.[7]

Wyly co-founded Zaadz.com, a global change-focused online network, in the same year. The company focused on social networking for individuals who wanted to make a positive impact on the world. The company was sold in 2007.[8]

Since 2008, Wyly has been an operating partner at Satori Capital, an impact investment firm dedicated to sustainable investments and promoting healthy and sustainable living.

In 2009, Wyly became the Transition Chair of Global Green, USA, a chapter of Green Cross International, where she focused on green urbanism initiatives. For over ten years, Wyly served on the board of Global Green, USA, and represented the organization at the United Nations. She was also an advisory board member of the New Media Foundation.

Wyly has been advocating for solutions to food system change for over a decade. As the Executive Director of the Food Choice Taskforce, a global initiative focusing on sustainable diets, Wyly specialized in research and communications at the intersection of environmental and human health.

From 2013 to 2015, Wyly directed the food system program at the Avatar Alliance Foundation, collaborating closely with think tank Chatham House to develop award-winning global research on livestock and climate change. Her research at the University of London, focusing on food policy and addressing meat and sustainability challenges, was acknowledged for its significant impact on British farming.[9]

Wyly directs the My Plate My Planet Initiative, a coalition of organizations advocating for sustainability within the US Dietary Guidelines. She created the Flourish capsule for the Near Future Summit to showcase innovations shaping the future of food, including culinary activations and a multi-media immersion in the future of protein.[10]

In 2017, Wyly founded Unreasonable Group and is the chairman and member of the board of directors. Unreasonable Group is an international company that supports growth-stage entrepreneurs, offering solutions to global challenges.[11]

Wyly hosts the BBC podcast "Unreasonable Impact: Food Solutions," a three-part series that delves into food sustainability. The podcast explores the latest innovations in agriculture technology, alternative proteins, and sustainable food practices, aiming to highlight the creative farming techniques that can benefit farmers, suppliers, and consumers. Guests include entrepreneurs such as Kate Hofman, founder and brand director of GrowUp Farms, and Alex Eaton, CEO of Sistema.bio, who share insights on creative farming techniques.[12]

Additionally, Wyly is the founder of Be the Change Productions, a documentary film production company specializing in documenting sustainable communities and lifestyles. She is actively involved in developing Pecos River Ranch, an eco-spa and resort located in New Mexico, in collaboration with actor and wilderness advocate Val Kilmer. Wyly is also a member of the Founder's Circle of FLOW, promoting entrepreneurial initiatives for sustainable prosperity.[13]

As a keynote public speaker, Wyly has delivered presentations at various events worldwide, including the United Nations Climate Change Conferences, the Aspen Ideas Festival, and the CNN Life Itself Conference. Her impactful work has garnered recognition in publications such as The New York Times, C Magazine, The Dallas Morning News, and The Herald Tribune.[14]

Personal life

Wyly lives in Colorado with her husband, Kimbal Musk, whom she married on April 7, 2018. Wyly and Kimbal Musk are actively involved in philanthropic efforts, particularly in supporting initiatives related to mental health, food justice, and sustainable food systems.[15]

Wyly married Deborah Anne Dyer, professionally known as Skin, the lead singer of the British rock band Skunk Anansie, in a civil partnership ceremony in 2013.[16] The duo separated in 2015.
