Born in Pleebo, Southeastern Liberia, in West Africa,[1] Cherbo Geeplay is a poet and writer who writes about his Grebo people, Africa, the Second Liberian Civil War, and the African diaspora. He was among the younger Liberian population that attended college during the civil war in the country.

His poetry has appeared in the Sea Breeze Journal (Liberia, 2009) and the Blue Lake Review (New York, 2018).[2] His debut short story, "A Check Point Away from Dying", was published in 2019 in New Orleans-based literary magazine Rigorous.[3] Geeplay was also a finalist for Adelaide Literary Magazine's Adelaide Literary Award for Poetry in 2018.[4][5][6][7]

He currently lives in Canada.

Childhood and education

Geeplay was born in Pleebo to parents who hailed from River Gee County. His father was a teacher with the Firestone Rubber Company, and his mother was a Sunday school teacher.[1]

He studied journalism at the Amos Cladius Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities (formerly Liberian College), University of Liberia. While at college, he worked as a radio journalist and a senior staff reporter for several news outlets.[8]

Poetry

Geeplay's work touches upon events in Africa, especially Liberia; the immigrant experience; as well as themes of nature and love.[9][10][11] He has also written about and drawn inspiration from figures such as Patricia Jabbeh Wesley, Pablo Neruda, and James Baldwin.[1] He writes primarily in English.[8][12]
