Charles Huang (born 1964) is a Chinese-born American businessman, investor, and philanthropist.

Early life

Huang was born in Hubei, China in 1964. He received his BA from Wuhan University.[1]

Upon graduation, he received a scholarship from the British Council for International Students and enrolled at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland to study business administration. He received his MBA in 1989 and a PhD in marketing in 1994, both from the University of Strathclyde.[2] During his PhD studies, Huang came under the mentorship of Professor Stephen Young, a former head of the department of marketing at the university, and researched the globalization of Chinese enterprises.

Career

Early career in securities

Upon graduating in 1994, Huang began his professional career as a securities analyst at HSBC (then James Capel Asia) in Hong Kong, covering H-share and B-share companies across various industries. [3] He was among the first generation of Chinese equity analysts to work in Hong Kong. In 1996, he joined CLSA Asia Pacific as a senior analyst in China Research, covering China's automotive, transport, and infrastructure sectors.

Huang joined China Brilliance Group for a seven-year tenure and served as its finance director.

He was CFO of Compass Pacific from 2000 to 2004 and became its deputy chairman in 2002.

Pasaca Capital

In 2016, Huang founded Pasaca Capital, a private equity firm based in Los Angeles, California.[1]

Innova Medical Group

In March 2020, Huang founded Innova Medical Group, which would become the COVID test kit provider in the world.[4] Innova claims to have delivered over 1.5 billion test kits to more than 30 countries.

Innova's test kits were used in the UK government's Operation Moonshot, a mass-testing program intended to test millions of UK residents for COVID-19 every day.[5]

Philanthropy

Huang founded the Charles Huang Foundation with a mission to "bolster, enable, and inspire global development in education, health, and innovation."[6] Through the foundation, Huang has made substantial donations to his alma maters, including a £50m donation to the University of Strathclyde, "the biggest single donation to any Scottish university, and among the most generous made to any British university."[7][2]
