Cathy Breslaw (born 1957) is an American contemporary visual artist, writer, and educator.[1] Though her foundation is in painting, Breslaw is best known for experimenting with accessible commercial materials to create large format wall, floor, sculptural, and installation works.[2] Breslaw has been featured in over 38 solo exhibitions and has participated in over 50 group exhibitions across the U.S and South Korea.[3][4]

Breslaw has professionally exhibited her work for the last three decades and her work has been displayed in museums, art centers, college and university galleries, and commercial galleries.[5] She brings to the table a unique and diverse approach to her visual art that is highly acclaimed.[6][7][8]

Breslaw has been an adjunct instructor of Art History and has lectured at colleges and universities and has been a contributor of exhibition reviews to magazines and blogs including Vanguard Culture,Art Scene magazine, San Diego Home and Garden, Artillery, San Diego Visual Arts Network, and Artful Life. In her diverse career, Breslaw has received multiple art and journalism awards and has been featured in several media outlets such as 123Art, Shepherd Express, San Diego Home and Garden, Bakersfield.com, SDNews.com, Ink Magazine, Decor and Style Magazine, Home and Decor, Malaysia Edition and others.[9][10][11]

Early life and education

Breslaw completed her bachelor’s degree in American studies from George Washington University. After her graduation, she earned a Masters Degree in Social Work specializing in counseling at Howard University. Breslaw also attended residencies at Painting's Edge, Idyllwild, CA. In 2003, Breslaw attended Claremont Graduate University, at the school of Visual Arts,earning two fellowships and acquiring a Master’s of Fine Arts with a specialization in painting in 2006.[12]

Career

Breslaw started her career as an individual contemporary visual artist in the 1990s’. Ever since then, she has created numerous art installations and paintings that have been featured in museums and exhibitions across the U.S.[13][14]

Breslaw has written multiple papers and articles for a number of magazines San Diego Home and Garden Magazine, San Diego Visual Arts Network, and Art Scene Magazine.[15] Breslaw is presently a cultural writer for Vanguard Culture, San Diego, CA, where she has been working since 2012. Apart from her valuable contributions to various magazines, Breslaw also runs a personal blog named - Artful Life, where she shares regular articles on creativity and the visual arts. The blog comprises interviews with critics, curators, museum directors, and other contributors to the art world as well as museum and gallery exhibition reviews.[16][17]

In 2015 Breslaw became an adjunct professor at Coastline Community College, Newport Beach, CA, where she teaches Art History Courses.[18] She also published a catalog of her exhibition Macro Views, Micro Wonders, at San Diego Mesa College which was published in 2015.[19][20]
