The Bhilai Institute of Technology (BIT) is the first institution of engineering in Central India to be supported solely by its alumni. In 1986, it was founded, and at the time, it was connected to the Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University.

When the Bhilai Steel Facility was commissioned at Bhilai in 1959, it was necessary to have staff who were appropriately qualified and competent to carry out the many technical duties that needed to be done at the plant. The numerous companies, industries, charitable institutions, and philanthropic societies of the area took the initiative to create an engineering institution after becoming aware of this need. In order to accomplish this goal, a trust was established and registered. In July of 1986, the Government of Madhya Pradesh granted permission to create a self-supporting and self-financing engineering institution, which led to the establishment of the Bhilai Institute of Technology.

Philanthropist and significant founding member of BIT, Seth Balkrishan was a crucial figure in the organisation. In Bhilai and the nearby districts, his contributions to the fields of education, sports, social growth, and the spiritual requirements of the society are considered to be legendary. Therefore, the institution is named after him in honour of his contributions.

BIT-Durg was founded in 1986; in the same year, it became affiliated with Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University in Raipur and began providing Bachelor of Engineering degrees in the fields of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication, and Mechanical Engineering to a maximum of 180 students at a time. Over the course of its existence, it has, among other degrees, conferred those in the fields of Computer Science and Engineering (in 1998), Master of Business Administration (in 1999), Master of Computer Applications (1999), Information Technology (2000), and Electrical and Electronics (2000). In 2005, the Institute became a part of the Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University, which had just opened its doors in Bhilai. It was granted autonomous status on July 16, 2020, making it the first engineering college in all of Chhattisgarh to have that distinction.

All of the courses for the Undergraduate Programs are attended on a full-time basis, whilst the Postgraduate Programs provide a mix of full-time and part-time study options. It gives students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Technology degree (B.Tech) in a variety of fields, including Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology, and more.

In addition to this, the institute maintains research centres in the following subfields of engineering: civil engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering mathematics, environmental engineering, and engineering chemistry. These centres were established so that the institute could encourage higher education and research.

The CGPET and the JEE-Main are the entrance exams for first-year students at the Institute.

Students may get into the MCA programme by taking the AIMCET, students can get into the MBA programme by taking the MAT, and students can get into the M.E./M.Tech programme by taking the GATE.
