Bernhard Kammel (born 28 September 1962 in Vienna) is an Austrian author, designer, film director and founder of the transdisciplinary art institution REAKTOR.
Life
Bernhard Kammel is the grandson of the architect Leo Kammel. Between 1980 and 1995 Kammel studied architecture, theology and forestry before going on to work for various architectural firms and as a forester.
Works
In the early 1980s he published a number of short stories and reportage features in a range of print media. Since 1979 he has been photographing black-and-white reportages and, since 1999, colour portraits and large-format narrative tableaux. In 2004 he began working with enhanced ‘still-image portraits’ as moving images depicting sequences of moments featuring breathing, standing and gazing.
In 2005 he founded his film production company, which since 2018 has been operating under the name Film REAKTOR. Kammel structures his films as indivisible works, from the original screenplay through to the design of the entire visual plane (sets, camera and editing). For the film A Late Summer’s Night, he found a kindred spirit in Lyudmila Kusakova as production designer.[1]
Kammel shot large parts of his film Elysium Hernalsiense, for which 2018 he received the Antonioni Award for best international feature film at the Blow Up Film Festival, on the premises of the Grand Établissement Gschwandner, which were discussed at that time. Soon after completing the film, he then proceeded to refurbish the entire building and founded the REAKTOR, a transdisciplinary art institution. In the course of the renovation work, state-of-the-art technical infrastructure was incorporated into the fabric of the historical, late classicist REAKTOR building. A cinema auditorium was set up in what was once the Strauss-Lanner Hall. The distinctive chandeliers and many other elements of the interior furnishings were designed by him specifically for the REAKTOR.
Since its opening in February 2018 REAKTOR quickly gained the Viennese audience’s trust, especially in the fields of Neue Musik/contemporary classical music, large scale art installations and arthouse film. REAKTOR International Film Festival and the art program REAKTOR Potenziale each attract hundreds of submissions from artists and filmmakers from all over the world. Among others Wien Modern and the renowned Austrian piano manufacturer Bösendorfer are cooperation partners of REAKTOR.
