Anna Esaki Smith is an American entrepreneur, education expert, and author. She is also a contributor to Forbes,[1][2] where she shares her expertise to help readers determine education trends, global challenges, and the changing workforce.[3]

Esaki-Smith is best known for providing international strategy and thought leadership advice to higher education institutions, private companies, and educational organizations.[4][5]

Early life and education

Esaki-Smith was born in Tarrytown, New York, in 1961 and grew up in Westchester County, New York. She graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in Asian Studies in 1983 and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1987.

Career

Esaki-Smith began her career in 1989, posted to Tokyo as a financial correspondent for Thomson Reuters covering the stock and foreign exchange markets. In 1989 she was transferred to Thomson Reuters’ New York bureau and was responsible for foreign exchange and bond market coverage, as well as writing articles on broad economic themes along with spot analyses on key economic indicators.[6]

In 1993, Esaki-Smith joined Newsweek as a Stringer working in Hong Kong. After three years she assumed the role of a correspondent in Shanghai, becoming the first accredited journalist for Newsweek in the mainland's most international city. Esaki-Smith worked for another five years with this media house.[7]

Esaki-Smith joined EF Education First as the Director of Communications in 2009. She worked in global public relations for nearly a year, coordinating with offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and London. Esaki-Smith helped publicize the development of Hult International Business School, Englishtown, and EF's online English language school.[8]

Esaki-Smith joined the British Council as an editorial director of Education Intelligence in 2011. She worked for this organization for over seven years, during which time she oversaw the introduction and development of the global education intelligence service as well as provided research to universities to inform international education efforts and student recruiting methods.[9]

In 2018 Esaki-Smith became the director of global outreach for UC Berkeley Extension and managed comprehensive recruitment and outreach activities in East Asia, South Asia, the Americas, the Middle East, and Africa for over a year.[10]

Esaki-Smith started Education Rethink, a New York-based research consultancy, in 2019. This firm is known for providing data-driven intelligence and trend assessments to higher education institutions, private corporations, and educational groups.[11]

Personal life

Esaki-Smith currently lives in Chappaqua with her husband. She has two sons who live in New York City.
