Alessandro Crimi (born June 25, 1983) is an Italian biomedical engineer, health economist, researcher, and lecturer.[1] He serves as a research leader in computer vision data science at the Sano Centre for Computational Medicine and a lecturer at AIIMS, Ghana.[2]

Crimi has gained recognition for his contributions to the field of biomedical research, with a portfolio of over 50 research papers. His work primarily revolves around computational medicine, brain connectivity, medical imaging, and the study of various diseases, including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and glioma.[3]

Early life and education

Crimi was born and raised in Palermo, Italy. He holds a Master of Science in Engineering from the University of Palermo, graduating in 2007. In 2011, he obtained a Ph.D. in medical imaging from the University of Copenhagen. He further obtained an MBA in healthcare management from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, affiliated with the University of Basel, in 2016.

Career

After his PH.D., Crimi worked as a postdoctoral researcher at various institutions, including the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (INRIA), ETH Zurich, the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), and the University Hospital of Zurich. His research focused on medical imaging, particularly neuroimage, ultrasound, machine learning, and the prediction of diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and glioma.[4]

Since 2012, Crimi has been a lecturer at the African Institution for Mathematical Sciences (AIIMS), Ghana, where he conducts a course on machine learning (pattern recognition). He also worked as a chief technology officer for the DocmeUp Project in association with the University of Zurich and Benjamin Amoah and Evelyn Anto. The project was an initiative to improve prenatal care in rural Ghana with mobile apps, portable ultrasound, and machine learning aimed at monitoring prenatal care and reducing child mortality.[5]

In 2020, Crimi founded Yawlab, a startup focused on developing medical devices for diagnosing malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, and several other diseases and educating people to use them.[6]

In August 2021, Crimi started as a research leader at the Sano Centre for Computational Medicine in Krakow, Poland. His research work focuses on computational science, medical imaging, and brain connectivity, and has been featured on the Digital Library of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).[7]

Crimi has authored numerous publications in the fields of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (FNIRS) and electroencephalogram (EEG)-based resting-state brain connectivity analysis. He has also contributed to the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for medical image analysis have centred on a multi-scale approach to improve the accuracy of brain tumour segmentation (BraTS). His contributions encompass the examination of neural networks, with a specific focus on connectomes, where he developed methodologies to discern multivariate causal connections within brain connections.[8]

Crimi is also a review editor for "Brain Imaging Methods" and "Neuroimaging Meta-Analyses" by Frontiers in Neuroscience and Frontiers in Neuroimaging, respectively. Additionally, he has participated in BrainLes, an acronym for the International MICCAI Society BrainLesion Workshop.[9] He is professor at AGH University of Science and Technology of Krakow, Poland.[10]

Awards

Crimi was recognized with the esteemed Afrinic Mobile Innovation FIRE Award in 2016.
