Ziyaad Aswan-Roman, known professionally as Ziyaad Luceō, is a Canadian artist, singer/songwriter, and record producer. With a smooth, hypnotic voice and an anomalous style of music, Aswan-Roman has created huge tides of influence within the contemporary R&B genre.[1] He is recognized for his versatile musical style, jumping from mysterious R&B to introspective songwriting with wide vocal range.[2] Born and raised in Toronto and Brampton, Aswan-Roman started his career in 2017 by anonymously uploading various songs on SoundCloud and YouTube.[3][4][5] From 2017-2018, Aswan-Roman released two mixtapes and multiple singles.[6][7][8][9] After these releases, he took a year hiatus from releasing music and engaging on social media platforms.

Yet in 2019-2020, Aswan-Roman made his return by releasing a package of singles on all streaming platforms. These songs would later create a lot of critical recognition especially on Spotify and Instagram|Instagram.[10] In late November of 2020, he independently released his first studio album called "Through These Eyes".[11] In 2021, as the COVID-19 pandemic continued, Aswan-Roman created another surprise album in dedication to his late grandmother called "Moment in Time".[12]

Early life

Ziyaad Aswan-Roman was born on May 9, 1995 and raised in Brampton, Canada|Canada.[13] He is the only child of Caroline Roman and Hassan Aswan, who were both first generation Canadians with Jamaica|Jamaican heritage. His father, Hassan Aswan, had a shady past and was not involved in Aswan-Roman's life since the age of 3. When growing up, life was often a struggle for him and his family. Aswan-Roman was raised by his mother, grandmother, aunt and uncle. Aswan-Roman had an affinity for the arts even from an early age. He was an avid listener of music and often wrote his own poetry and songs all throughout his adolescence.

Aswan-Roman attended Cardinal Leger Secondary School. In his last year of high-school, he created his first set of songs; covering the Weeknd, Kanye West and Drake (musician)|Drake songs with his friends from class. When applying to post-secondary schools, Aswan-Roman was almost denied on every application. He was finally accepted into Humber College for a Bachelor of Marketing.

Career

2017-2021: Early beginnings

Ziyaad Aswan-Roman began his career by writing, composing and producing songs since 2017.[14][15][16] He would release songs via SoundCloud and YouTube|Youtube. In 2017-2018, Aswan-Roman would self-release a few Mixtape|mixtape compilations.[17][18][19][20] He was able to secure small Open mic|open-mic gigs around his city, which would add to the attention toward each tape. In late 2018, Aswan-Roman met Navjot and Harjot Chahal, two Record producer|producers looking to get onto the Toronto music scene. Aswan-Roman approached the two producers with a new album idea. The Chahal brothers played some rough instrumentals and the trio created some Demo (music)|demos. The first song created for this new album idea was called "The One". In mid 2019, Aswan-Roman connected with up-and-coming Audio engineer|audio-engineer, Adam Buckley. Aswan-Roman and Buckley connected immediately and started finalizing works for release. In November 2019, he released his first single on all streaming platforms called "Lay You Down".[21] Later in 2020, Aswan-Roman would release three additional singles — "On the Down-Low," "The One" and, "Turn Me On"[22]— that would ultimately bring a lot of attention and support toward the up and coming artist. In November 2020, Aswan-Roman would self-release his debut album "Through These Eyes".[23] In the beginning of his career, Aswan-Roman worked at Nordstrom.
