Ayşe Zeynep Ünal (born May 7, 1970) is a Turkish novelist and playwright. She gained her initial exposure from her works being selected for radio drama. Such as her short story Hayvan Sevgisi aired in 1994 on TRT 1 which would be in Radyo Oyunları (2011) and again in 2014 when several stories from Normandiya Yolcusu (2020) were aired on Radyo Ki a private radio channel created by Kocaeli University.

Early life and education

Rade (née Ünal) was born in Istanbul, Turkey, the second of two children of İnan Ünal, a geologist and Handan Türkel a former literary translator.

In 1988 she traveled to London to practice hotel management. Her time spent and acquaintances made here inspired her to focus on crime fiction. A genre she would focus on in her later career. It was also here that she raised her knowledge of the English language to a literary proficiency, which she used to become a certified translator, like her mother when she returned to Istanbul in 1990.

Academic career

In 2009 she graduated from Marmara University with a bachelor's degree in business management and pursued a professional career in finance and marketing. Though she simultaneously had been compiling short stories for her books Radyo Oyunları and Radyo Oyunları 2 (2015) since her return from London.

In 2014 she graduated with a high honors master's degree from Yeditepe University in comparative literature. She incorporated most elements from there in Sherlock Türkiye’de (2019) a collection of short stories submitted by different writers featuring the fictional character Sherlock Holmes.

She gained relative acclaim in 2017 from the literature magazine Sabit Fikir, notably for "her use of different forms in her writings that grasped the contemporary age she lived in".[1] The following year she collaborated once more with several novelists for the writing and subsequent publication of Aşk Mektupları (2018).

Since 2018 she has been studying at the University of Geneva towards a doctorate in English literature.

Personal life

In 2015, she moved from Istanbul to Saint-Jean-de-Gonville, France before moving again in 2017 to Saint-Genis-Pouilly, a neighbouring commune in the Ain department. Both of which border the Swiss city of Geneva and the town of Versoix, which in turn have influenced the context of her writings, notably Sherlock Türkiye’de and Yeniköy'de Bir Yalı (2017) respectively. The latter of which was critiqued on the Açık Radyo radio station[2]

Her experiences and hardships as an immigrant were additionally reflected in her short stories.
