Kim Yugyeom (Hangul: 김유겸; born November 17,1997), known mononymously as Yugyeom, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, producer and dancer. He is a member of South Korean boy group GOT7 under JYP Entertainment and one half of the Kpop duo sub-unit JUS2.[1]

Early life

Despite being born in Seoul, Yugyeom has spent a little of his childhood at Saudi Arabia due to his dad's nature of work. It was later that they moved to Namyangju, where he grew up alongside his one older brother. He attended Donong Elementary School, Migeum Middle School, and Hamlim Arts High School, majoring in Street Dance. He then went to Daekyeong University, changing his major to Model Department.[2][3] His mom initially didn't want him to become an idol and wanted him to be a normal student like everyone else, but he insisted to give him a chance.[4][5]

Prior to debuting, he won 2nd place at the Adrenaline House Dance Battle in 2011 and was appearing in multiple dance competitions. He accepted and became a trainee in late 2010-early 2011. He has also made a cameo appearance on the fourth episode of Mnet's 2013 reality-survival program WIN: Who is Next, which presented iKon and Winner members of YG, alongside his co-members Mark, Jackson, and BamBam.[6][7]

Career

2014-Present: Debut, GOT7 & JUS2

On January 16, 2014, Yugyeom debuted as the main dancer of the seven member kpop boy group GOT7 with their first EP, Got It?, which peaked at number two on the Gaon Album Chart and number one on Billboard's World Albums Chart.[8][9] In 2015, JYP Entertainment in partnership with Youku Tudou, released a mini web drama series titled "Dream Knight" in which the drama featured the GOT7 members as themselves.[10]

In 2016, he participated in Mnet's Hit The Stage, a show in which idols from different K-Pop groups team up with professional dance teams to compete in a dance survival contest, where they are given different themes to portray every week. He won 2nd place in the 9th episode (losing only 3 points to Hyoyeon from Girl's Generation) and ultimately won 1st place during the final episode, battling against Hyoyeon of Girls' Generation, U-Kwon of Block B, Shownu of Monsta X, Ten of NCT, and Chungha of I.O.I.[11][12] His Hit The Stage performance for the 9th episode which had the theme "The Fight" is the most viewed performance from the dance survival contest on Youtube, amounting to 18 million views as of July 2020.[13]

Yugyeom soon began taking an active part in writing and composing many of GOT7 songs, debuting as a songwriter with “빛이나” (See The Light) for their Flight Log: Departure album.[14] He also took part in creating choreographies for most GOT7 songs, notably for their song "If You Do" from their EP Mad (with Jinyoung) which showcases an immense amount of footwork for the chorus part [15], and "Poison" from their EP DYE (with Jinyoung and Jackson).

In April 2018, together with fellow member JB, he participated in the art collaboration project "Collaboran" for carbonated mineral water brand Perrier with American multimedia artist Ben Jones. JB and Yugyeom’s art collaboration with Ben Jones was unveiled at a launching event in April 22 at Nakwon Musical Instrument Arcade.[16]

During Got7's 3rd full length studio album Lullaby, Yugyeom released his solo song, "Fine" with it's accompanying music video. The music video was released on September 12, 2018 and has over 2 million views on Youtube as of July 2020.[17]

In February 2019, he participated in SBS' reality show Law of The Jungle where they traveled to Northern Mariana Islands at the Pacific Ocean.[18] [19] In one of the episodes, he suffered a minor injury when he was building a shelter with bamboo stalks with the other cast members. He had a small puncture under his left foot so he took his sock off to see the wound and explained that his blisters burst. After receiving medical care, he immediately stood on his feet and went back to his work despite the immense pain that he felt. His positive attitude impressed the crew and cast. [20]

In March 5, 2019, he debuted as one half of the Kpop duo JUS2 alongside fellow GOT7 member and leader JB, with the mini album Focus.[21] The kpop duo's music genre has more of an R&B vibe with a calm and mature aspect in contrast to GOT7's music genre. [22] [23]The music video, with the title track "Focus On Me" was released on March 3, 2019 and has over 37 millions views on Youtube as of July 2020. Their mini album also debuted at number 6 on The Billboard World Album Chart.[24] In March 26 of the same year, JUS2 released an OST, titled "Take" for the drama He is Psychometric starring their fellow GOT7 member Jinyoung. [25][26]

In February 2020, he made his solo magazine cover debut by gracing the global art fashion magazine MAPS in a double cover edition for their February issue.[27][28][29]

In May 2020, he appeared on MBC's The King of Mask Singer, a singing competition where competitors are given masks to hide their identities to avoid biases or prejudice. He appeared as "Mr. Raspberry Wine", losing with only a one point difference in the first round.[30]

Personal life

He gained the nickname "Brownie" due to him being a big fan of Chris Brown. He is also a big fan of G-Dragon from Big Bang. He loved dancing since his childhood, particularly in "house dance", a street dance style characterized by "jacking", "lofting" and "footwork". His hobby is playing the piano. He speaks both Korean and Japanese. His favorite music genres are R&B and Hip-Hop.[4]

He has a Soundcloud account where he releases his own self-produced tracks. He has 9 tracks on his account as of July 2020.[31][32]

He has also shown support for the Black Lives Matter Movement and has donated undisclosed amount.[33]
