Yorgo Tloupas (born 18 December 1974) is an awarded[1][2][3][4] French graphic designer and creative director, specialised in logo and typeface design and magazine art direction.[5][6]

Biography

Yorgo Tloupas was born in Paris on the 18 December 1974. He is the son of the Greek sculptor Philolaos (sculptor)[7] and of an Italian-French art teacher. Tloupas grew up in the Chevreuse, in the house-studio built by his father.[8] Avid sportsman since his childhood, Tloupas says that skateboard shaped his aesthetic sensibility and visual literacy, while snowboard was the springboard for his entire professional career: in 1996, freshly graduated from ESAG Penninghen, he sold his final art school project, a logo and a range of snowboards, to Rossignol Skis.[9][10][11]

His graphic design studio Yorgo&Co, founded in Paris in 2011 works with luxury, art, fashion, sports, media and automotive brands such as Artcurial,[12] Cartier,[13] Diptyque,[14] Hermès,[15] Hôtel de Crillon,[16][17] Lacoste, Louis Vuitton,[13] Loro Piana, Martell (cognac),[18][19] Omega[20] and Swatch,[21] among many others.

Yorgo Tloupas is involved in Black Crows Skis from the start, he helps the brands grow, both as a shareholder and as design director.[22] The blackcrows 2017-2018 ski range is part of the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.[23]

He teaches logo design at ESAG Penninghen, Institut Français de la Mode, École cantonale d'art de Lausanne as well as Sciences Po, and holds conferences and talks worldwide.[24][25] In 2018 he has held a TEDxSciencesPo talk on (re)branding.[26]

Work

Magazines and books

Yorgo Tloupas has launched and successfully art-directed multiple lifestyle & cultural magazines. He art directed Crash Magazine.[27][28][29] and Magazine[30] between 1999 and 2000. In London, in 2001, he founded, along with John Rankin Waddell and Daniel Alexander Ross (Dazed & Confused founders), Intersection magazine.[31] Back in Paris he art directed the French edition of GQ[32] in 2010 and Libération's magazine Next[33] in 2015. Two years later, Beaux Arts magazine, a prominent French art review, was re-designed by Yorgo's Parisian studio.[34] In 2013 he launched the French edition of one of Condé Nast's most iconic titles, Vanity Fair (magazine), and art directed the magazine till 2021.[5] He is currently the artistic director of the French cultural magazine Les Inrockuptibles.[35]

Yorgo's Parisian studio, Yorgo&Co., has also designed several brand magazines: the first issue of Louis Vuitton's LV the Book, published in 11 different languages (2014)[36] the Loro Piana Journal (2016-2018)[37] also published in multiple languages, Vilebrequin Splash almanac (2021)[38] and Audemars Piguets Stories (2021). The studio is also in charge of the design of Cartier (jeweler) magazine, 365 a year of Cartier (since 2019),[39] and of the graphic art direction of several books for Omega SA,[20] Google ATAP,[40][41] Just an Idea books,[42] Lafayette Anticipations, Kamel Mennour.

Visual identities

Yorgo Tloupas is the author of the ski brand Black Crows Skis visual identity (2006). His Paris-based studio, Yorgo&Co, is worldwide known for the design and the redesign of several brand logos. The studio designed, signage, way-finding, venue’s logos for the reopening, in 2016, of the Rosewood Hôtel de Crillon in Paris[17][16]and for the French auction house Artcurial. In 2017 Ricard (drink) introduced a new identity designed by Yorgo&Co,[43] as well as the oldest brands of cognac in the world, Martell (cognac), that had its logo redesigned by Yorgo Tloupas's team that same year.[19] In 2017 the has just studio signed the new visual identity of the Gaité Lyrique, a Parisian creative and cultural centre that promotes culture under the prism of digital innovation.[44] The logo of Les Inrockuptibles was redone, in 2021, to mark the release of the monthly magazine edition art directed by Yorgo Tloupas.

Typography

Yorgo Tloupas has often collaborated with renowned type designers and Type foundry: with (Jean-François Porchez, Commercial Type, Production type).[45][5][46] Since 2017 all custom fonts are designed by Yorgo&Co. in-house team.[47] The first in-house font designed was, La Gaité Rounded[48], for the Gaîté Lyrique, a digital arts and modern music centre in Paris. In 2019, Exposition, a Sans Serif typeface was designed for Galerie Patrick Seguin art gallery in Paris.[49] In 2020 Yorgo&Co. produced two typefaces - Cartier Brilliant Cut and Cartier Fancy Cut - for the jewellery manufacturer and watchmaker Cartier (jeweler).[39]
