Yoonjin Won was born in Seoul and developed a strong interest in mathematics and physics from an early age. She excelled in both fields, earning numerous medals at national and regional mathematics and physics Olympiads. She graduated in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Seoul National University, with a double major in Business, achieving a summa cum laude distinction. She came to the United States for her master’s and doctoral degrees at Stanford University. Her dissertation, titled Carbon Nanotube Films and Microjet Cooling Devices for Thermal Management, was jointly supervised by Thomas W. Kenny and Kenneth E. Goodson.

Career and research

In 2015, Won joined University of California, Irvine, as an assistant professor. Here she started working on thermal management solutions focusing on phase-change phenomena. In 2017, she was awarded a National Science Foundation CAREER Award to investigate two-phase phenomena using well-designed metals. She was made an Associate Professor with tenure at UC Irvine in 2021. At the time, the technology industry was at the beginning of the AI revolution. She contributed to the field of AI for thermal and energy science. She is specialized in scientific data collection and interference.
