Yasuhiko Aihara (born 1933) is a Japanese emeritus professor of engineering at the University of Tokyo, known for his contributions to the field of aeronautical engineering.

Biography

Yasuhiko Aihara was born in Japan in 1933. In 1951, at age 18, he received his Bachelor’s of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Tokyo; he earned his doctorate in the same field from the University of Tokyo on June 24, 1963.[1] Aihara’s wrote his dissertation on the transition of an incompressible boundary layer along a concave surface.[2] In 1986, Aihara was appointed as the eighteenth chairman of the Japan Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences.[3] That same year, he was hired to the faculty of engineering at the University of Tokyo, where he would work until 1993.[4] After leaving the University of Tokyo, Aihara would serve in a number of public roles. He was appointed committee chairman of the Aircraft and Railway Accidents Investigation Commission in 1998; inspector in the Electronic Navigation Research Institute on February 27, 2001; chairman of the committee on accident investigations of the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan on July 14, 2002; and chairman of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Committee on Aerospace Technology on December 13, 2002. As of 2020, he remains an emeritus professor at the University of Tokyo.
