Xournalpp (also known as Xournal++) is a free and open-source desktop note-taking software with PDF annotation support.[note 1] It's available for Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X. Xournalpp is a C++ fork of Xournal and based on the GTK, Cairo and Poppler libraries.[note 2]

Features

Xournalpp offers basic handwriting tools. Pen and Highlighter have changeable color, size and stroke type. Predefined shapes, text, formulas and images can be inserted into the document.

When annotating PDFs the annotations are not embedded into the PDF file but kept in a separate file. Xournalpp tries to keep compatibility with Xournal (.xoj) but uses its own file format (.xopp) to support the additional features.

  • Mouse, stylus and touchscreen input
  • Annotating PDFs
  • LaTeX support
  • Stroke Recognizer
  • Audio recording and playback
  • Customizable toolbar and page templates
  • Multiple paper style backgrounds
  • Lua Plugins
  • Multi Language Support

A review in the german Linux news magazine LinuxUser notes how these features make Xournalpp a good tool to use for recording lectures and talks.[1]
