Wolfgang Michael Kuebler (* July 19, 1967 in Cologne) is a German-Canadian physiologist and Director of the Institute of Physiology at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin.[1]

Life

Kuebler studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (1987 - 1994) and received his doctorate summa cum laude in 1997 at the Institute of Surgical Research for his thesis on "Leukocyte kinetics in the pulmonary microcirculation". After a postdoctoral period at Columbia University New York with a fellowship of the German Research Foundation (DFG), he completed his habilitation for experimental surgery in 2001 at the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. In 2002, he accepted an appointment to an endowed Associate Professorship of the Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin at the Institute of Physiology of the Free University of Berlin, which became part of the Charité Berlin in 2003. In 2008, he moved to St. Michael's Hospital (Toronto) in Toronto, where he holds a Full Professorship in the Departments of Surgery and Physiology at the University of Toronto since 2015.[2] In 2016, he succeeded Axel Radlach Pries as Director of the Institute of Physiology at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin.[3]

Wolfgang M. Kuebler is the son of the cardiologist Wolfgang E. Kuebler. Wolfgang M. Kuebler is married and has two children.

Work

Kuebler's scientific work focuses on the physiology and pathophysiology of the pulmonary circulation. Particular foci of his research, which comprises almost 300 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, are the (patho-)mechanisms of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction, endothelial barrier failure in ARDS and pneumonia, and vascular remodeling in pulmonary hypertension. Other areas of Kuebler's research work address the dynamics of inflammatory cells in the lung, alveolar dynamics during mechanical ventilation, the regulation of fluid homeostasis in the lung by epithelial ion channels and the development of pulmonary edema, and near-infrared spectroscopy.

Awards (selection)

  • 1999: Hermann Rein Award of the German Society for Microcirculation and Vascular Biology e. V. [4]
  • 2000: Lafon Award of the European Society for Microcirculation[5]
  • 2016: Arthur Weber Award "Research to help" of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie|German Cardiac Society[6]
  • 2016: Appointed a Member of the College of the Royal Society of Canada[7]
  • 2019: Fellow of the European Respiratory Society (FERS)[8]
  • 2019: Fellow of the American Physiological Society (FAPS)[9]

Activity in committees, professional societies and journals

At the American Physiological Society, Kuebler has served as Chair of the Respiratory Section (2011-2014), the Strategic Advisory Committee (2014-2017), and the Publications Committee (2023-present)[10]. For the German Society for Microcirculation and Vascular Biology e.V., he chaired the 2004 and 2022 annual meetings as President. Since 2014, Kuebler is Associate Editor of the American Journal of Physiology - Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology [11] and since 2017 Associate Editor of the European Respiratory Journal [12]. He is a member of the editorial board of various other journals. He is an Associate Principal Investigator at the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) and the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK). Since 2019, Kuebler serves as Vice Chair of the Faculty Board at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
