Winsome Brown is an actress, writer and director known for her dynamic range and ability to portray complex and charismatic characters. She worked extensively in film, television, and theater, receiving critical acclaim for her performances in all three mediums. [1]

Career

Brown's film credits include playing Anna Leonberger in the 2020 Paul Greengrass film "News of the World" opposite Tom Hanks [2], and Theresa Sackler in the 2021 Hulu limited series "Dopesick"[3]. She also recurs as Zola, a Kryptonian Witch, on the CW series "Supergirl"[4]. Brown appeared in the final season of "Elementary" [5]as the wife of a Queens cop whose son is accused of domestic terrorism. Her film the "Violinist" premiered at the The Hudson Opera House.[6]

In the theater world, Brown has performed in a number of productions, including playing Lady Macbeth and Titania/Hippolyta for Shakespeare on the Sound[7][8], Eurydice in Seamus Heaney’s "Burial at Thebes" for Irish Repertory Theatre[9], and Sylvia in "The Pill" at La MaMa[10]. Brown's solo play "This is Mary Brown"[11] premiered at La MaMa ETC and internationally at the Edinburgh Fringe, and her solo play "Hit the Body Alarm"[12] (with a live score by John Zorn and Sean Hagerty) premiered at the Performing Garage, where she was a visiting artist. She also performed in André Gregory/Wallace Shawn’s "The Master Builder,"[13] and in the Jonathan Demme film of the project. Brown played Hillary Clinton in the opera "Women the War Within"[14] by Pulitzer Prize-winner Du Yun, and Virginia Woolf in Irina Brook’s "La Vie Matérielle/ Shakespeare’s Sister".[15]

Brown's talents extend to audiobooks and writing, where she is a gifted narrator known for her ability to create complex characters through voice and accent. Her first audiobook was the novel "Sarah"[16] by JT LeRoy for Blackstone. Her writing has appeared in Salon.[17]

Early life and education

Brown was born in Toronto, Canada, and received her B.A. from Harvard College[18]. She has studied acting at Shakespeare & Company, with Bob Krakower, Manhattan Film Institute[19], The Odin Teatret, The Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski & Thomas Richards, and others. Brown is fluent in French, Spanish, and Italian, conversational in German, and skilled in many accents.

Awards and recognition

In 2003, Brown received the Obie Award for Best Ensemble for her performance in Heather Woordbury's "Tale of 2Cities: An American Joyride on Multiple Tracks"[20] at UCLA Live, Freud Theatre.
