William Louey is a Hong Kong-based businessman, leader, and philanthropist.[1] He is the director of Kowloon Motor Bus Company. Louey is also a founding member of JNW Properties and chairman of Hong Kong Construction (Technology).[2]

Louey has established a charity, the William SD Louey Educational Foundation, that sponsors overseas education.[3]

Early Life and education

Louey was born and raised in Hong Kong. He is the only grandson of William S.D. Louey, founder of the Kowloon Motor Bus Company. He went to study at Millfield School, England. Growing up, Louey was interested in the arts and wanted to pursue education at St. Martin's College in London.

Louey holds a degree in accounting and financial management from Buckingham University in Britain. He also received an honorary fellowship from Oxford University. At 18, he started investing in stocks and has since held a portfolio of investments across stocks, property, and businesses.

Career

After graduating, Louey worked as an auditor at Peat Marwick in London. Subsequently, he returned to Hong Kong to join his family business, Kowloon Motor Bus Company.[4]

Louey is a director of Kowloon Motor Bus Company. The company is based in Hong Kong and is a 102-year-old family-owned corporation, founded by Louey’s grandfather, Mr. William S.D. Louey. Kowloon Motor Bus Company operates public transport. In 1961, Kowloon Motor Bus Holdings was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange as parent company of Kowloon Motor Bus. In 2005, the company was renamed Transport International Holdings.Louey, as a director, has expanded the company's fleet to over 4,300 buses operating on more than 400 routes. Under the new generation’s leadership, KMB is actively investing in electric buses as a replacement for the current diesel fleet, reflecting the company's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.[5][6]

Louey is also a founding member of JNW Properties.[7]

Louey is the chairman of Hong Kong Construction (Technology), a local licensee for Geofiber. Geofiber is a Japanese greening solution that is used to prevent slope erosion.[8]

Louey has also ventured into filmmaking, restaurant, and clothing businesses. He has produced movies like the finale of Tsui Hark's A Chinese Ghost Story trilogy, released by Golden Princess, his family's film studio. He also established a restaurant, Tartufo, a famous eatery in Tsim Sha Tsui, in 1989. The restaurant featured waiters and waitresses singing opera while serving food, as well as appearing in a number of Hong Kong movies. However, it closed its operations in 1993.[9]

Louey has launched Jesiri, a clothing line with six stores in China.

Philanthropy

Louey is also an avid philanthropist. He supports various charitable causes and organizations, including the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1995, he established the William SD Louey Educational Foundation in memory of his grandfather, the late Mr. William S.D. Louey. The Foundation identifies students from Mainland China and Hong Kong and sponsors their education at universities in the United States and Britain.

Louey has been included in Tatler Magazine's top 500 list of Hong Kong’s power elite.

Personal life

Louey resides in Hong Kong with his wife, Marie, and two children, son Alastair and daughter Alexandra.
