William Garfield Walker is an american conductor and composer based in Vienna. He currently serves as the chief conductor of the Nova Orchester Wien.
Career
He began his musical journey studying cello before focusing on conducting.[1]
At age 16, he was a section cellist in the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. He studied cello with Richard Hirschl at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra then continued at the Royal College of Music in London[2] under Alexander Boyarsky, where he also studied conducting with Michael Rosewell. Later, he pursued further conducting studies in Vienna.[3]
He has studied with renowned conductors including Riccardo Muti, Paavo Järvi, Vladimir Fedoseyev, and Jorma Panula.[3]
Nova Orchester Wien
William Garfield Walker serves as Chief Conductor of the Nova Orchester Wien (NOW!), a newly established professional orchestra based in Vienna. Early in their collaboration, Walker and the orchestra appeared at the Wiener Musikverein and contributed a performance to the 2020 G20 Economic Forum.[4]
Recognitions
Walker is a three-time recipient of the Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Award (2022, 2023, 2024)[5] In 2020, he was awarded the AAF Ansbacher/Farber Conducting Fellowship from the Salzburg Fellowship[6] and that same year the Mississippi House of Representatives passed a resolution honoring his contributions to music.[7] In 2023, he won first prize in the Professional Orchestra Division of The American Prize National Nonprofit Competitions in the Performing Arts[8] and was invited for the 2023 season at the Washington National Opera.[1][9]
