'Wendy Benge',(born August 25) is an American and New Zealand film producer, writer, director and film finance and production attorney.[1][2][3][4] Benge's career began as a Production and Finance attorney working on such films as Lee Daniels' The Butler starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey (2013), Sidney Lumet's Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007), Saw IV (2007), W directed by Oliver Stone (2008), All Good Things starring Kirsten Dunst and Ryan Gosling (2010) Beyond a Reasonable Doubt starring Michael Douglas (2009), New York, I Love You starring Natalie Portman, Bradley Cooper, Orlando Bloom and Blake Lively (2008), Brothers Bloom starring Adrian Brody and Rachel Weisz (2008), Not Forgotten starring Simone Baker, Paz Vega and Chloe Grace Moretz (2009), The Private Lives of Pippa Lee starring Keanu Reeves, Blake Lively, Julianne Moore and Winona Ryder (2009).
Independent Film Producer
Benge had her break through in producing independent film as an Executive Producer on Somewhere Slow (2013).[5][6] The film had its world premiere at Cinequest Film Festival and won Best Narrative Feature Brooklyn Film Festival. In 2013, Benge Co-Produced Elmore Leonard's Life of Crime starring Jennifer Aniston, Yasiin Bey, Isla Fisher, Will Forte, Mark Boone Jr., Tim Robbins and John Hawkes, which had its premiere during the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.[7][8] Following this film, Benge was an Executive Producer of Life After Beth starring Anna Kendrick, Aubry Plaza, Dane DeHaan and John C. Reilly, which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014[9] and an Executive Producer on Apartment Troubles starring Will Forte and Megan Mullally (2014).[10][11]
In 2015, Benge founded Bullet Entertainment in the United States and in New Zealand (2016)[12] and stepped up to the helm of Bullet Entertainment Studios[13][14] and as the Producer of the motion picture Broken Vows starring Wes Bentley, Jaimie Alexander, Cam Gigandet, Alexandra Breckenridge, Alex Ladove and Astrid Bryan.[15] Thereafter, Benge produced The Capture (2017) which won Best Feature Film at the Berlin Sci-Fi Film Festival.[16][17]
In 2022, Benge produced the action thriller 9 Bullets, starring Lena Headey, Sam Worthington, La La Anthony and Cam Gigandet.[18][19]
Presently, Benge is a producer on the motion picture Tranzloco which will star Rosie Perez, Jonny Beauchamp, Alex Meraz, Danny Trejo, Brianna Hildebrand, Eiza Gonzalez, Bar Paly, Dustin Ybarra, and Crispin Glover, with writer and director Will De Los Santos, the writer of 2002 cult classic Spun.[20] Subsequently, Benge is a producer on feature film Love in Vein staring Nick Stahl and Maiara Walsh, which is based upon the book Wasting Talent written by Ryan Leone, and of which, she will produce a documentary with director Will De Los Santos based upon the life of Ryan Leone called Idiot Savant: The Savage Life of Ryan Leone (2018).
Author and Directorial Debut
Benge will produce and have her directorial debut on the feature film All the Way Gone which is written by Benge and Zach Touchon. Benge and Zach Touchon, as writing partners, also wrote the screenplay 31 Counts which will be produced by Benge and is based the story of Ron Semler.[21] Benge is working on a book called Navigating the Hollywood Gauntlet - The Written and Unwritten Laws of Hollywood, "a book", stated by Scoop Independent News of New Zealand “that will aid such individuals in not only establishing their dreams but to do it in an honourable fashion”.[22]
Education and Licenses
Benge is a member of the State Bar of California[23] and holds the position of Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and as Law Practitioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia.[24] Wendy as a finance and production attorney worked at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP. Wendy graduated from Duke University School of Law where she received a Master of Laws (LLM) in 2003.[25] Wendy obtained her first law degree, an LLB, from University of Canterbury School of Law in New Zealand (2001) along with a BA in Philosophy of Law, Ethics and Value Theory and a BA Religion from the University of Southern California (1998) and further studied Philosophy at University of Edinburgh in Scotland (1996) and studied project finance and international law at University of Hong King School of Law in Hong Kong in 2001. Wendy also served in the United States Navy from 1988-1991 and was awarded the Unit Accommodation Medal from the Secretary of the Navy in her capacity as an Airman as part of an Anti-Submarine Warfare Unit.[26]
