Wendell Yohannes Hanes is an American TV and film composer. He is the owner of Volition Sound in New York City.[1] Hanes has composed scores for films, commercials, and TV series, including the Netflix feature film "The Game Changers," the documentary "The Sit In: Harry Belafonte Hosts The Tonight Show," and the Netflix "Family Reunion." Hanes received the Sports Emmy in 2021 and Primetime Emmy consideration in 2020 for his work on the Netflix sitcom "Family Reunion." He has garnered multiple nominations for the New York Film and TV Festival, Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, and Grammy Awards.[2][3]
During his career, Hanes has also recorded, performed, and collaborated with 50 Cent, Jay Z, Mary J. Blige, Usher, Adina Howard, and Beyoncé.[4]
Biography
Hanes holds a bachelor's degree in semiotic theory and journalism from Brown University.
Hanes is a multi-award-winning TV and film composer and owner of Volition Sound in New York City. He has scored music for various films, short movies, TV series, documentaries, commercials, and music videos. He earned a Sports Emmy in 2021 and Primetime Emmy consideration in 2020 for his work on the Emmy-winning Netflix sitcom "Family Reunion." Hanes has also scored several films, including the Emmy-nominated "American Reckoning" and "The Sit In: Harry Belafonte Hosts the Tonight Show."[5]
Hanes compositions for the HBO docu-series "Black and Missing" garnered multiple awards, including the Television Academy Honors Award, NAACP Image Award, Independent Spirit Award, and Gracie Award.[6]
In addition to his film and TV work, Hanes has produced and arranged musical themes for ESPN's flagship programs like SportsCenter, NFL Countdown, College GameDay, and The NBA. With over 2,000 commercials and 50 films scored, Hanes has won numerous advertising awards, including Clios, Cannes Lions, Effies, Addys, London International Awards, Andy's, One Shows, and Montreaux's Golden Award.[7]
Hanes has collaborated with several notable artists, including 50 Cent, Jay Z, Mary J. Blige, Usher, Adina Howard, Beyoncé, Lil Wayne, Drake, Future, Nikki Minaj, and Yo Gotti.[8]
