Watan News LLC is an independent Arab American news media corporation based in the United States of America. It was established by a Palestinian-American journalist Nezam Mahdawi in Washington, DC, in 1990.[1] It is one of the major Arab American newspapers in the United States that represents all parties’ perspectives instead of favoring any political party. Watan is well-known for its unbiased coverage of Arab countries' political challenges, as well as a variety of other topics, in addition to the regular news, editorials, sports, and features published weekly in print and online modes.[3]

Print Newspaper

Watan News the first issue was released in March 1991. It was the first Arab newspaper that was independent and published freely without any barriers.[9] The main audience was Arab immigrants in the United States and was published as a weekly print newspaper.[10]

Watan News has gained popularity as it was independent and has an unbiased opinion on the political views of Arab countries. By 1995, Watan newspaper expanded to the other major cities in the United States. Since then, it has built a reputation for its open political stance and published many widely shared columns about the politics in Arab countries.[11]

Digital version

Watan eventually also began publishing daily on the internet offering readers around the world immediate access to most of the daily newspaper's contents.[12] Soon Watan’s website was receiving over 120,000 page views per day even after its ban in some of the Arab countries (UAE and other Gulf states). Then, in order to reach all Arabs in the countries where Watan.com was restricted, Watan News LLC developed Watanserb.com, an alternative domain for Watan.com. Both domains are now up and running, although with different content.[13]

Vision

According to Watan News, their vision is to become a leafing news provider that prioritizes good governance to focus on the sustainable future of the Arab people and help ally with the people of the other countries in the near future.[14]
