Wade Hassan Selman (born May 12, 1978) is an American financial analyst, systems scientist, and software developer.[1] He is the founder and Chief Systems Scientist of Sapphire Tide Capital (STC), a financial technology firm established in 2017. Selman is known for his work in quantitative finance, particularly the development of the Neravon Directional Intelligence (NDI) system, which integrates elements of quantum probability, artificial intelligence, and financial modeling.
Early life and education
Selman was born in Boston, United States. He demonstrated an early aptitude for mathematics and science.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Harvard University (1996–2000). He later attended the University of Cambridge, where he completed a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Physics at the Cavendish Laboratory (2000–2002), followed by a PhD in Applied Mathematics (2002–2006). His doctoral research focused on stochastic processes, financial mathematics, and quantum-inspired models for portfolio optimization under the supervision of L. C. G. Rogers.[2]
Career
Early career
Selman conducted academic research at institutions including Columbia University and the University of Chicago. During this period, he proposed theoretical frameworks such as the "algorithmic correction mechanism for behavioral biases" and the "systemic resonance model of emotional dynamics and capital flows."
Bridgewater Associates (2006–2012)
In 2006, Selman joined Bridgewater Associates as part of its systematic investment research team. His work focused on multi-asset portfolio modeling, risk analysis, and correlation structures.
He contributed to enhancements in risk allocation frameworks, including the development of nonlinear correlation models and tail-risk management tools. His research was applied to improve portfolio resilience during periods of market stress, including the 2008 financial crisis.
Two Sigma (2012–2017)
Selman later joined Two Sigma, where he served in a senior trading and research role. His work involved integrating machine learning, large-scale data analysis, and quantitative modeling into investment strategies.
During his tenure, he led the development of multi-layer market models and probabilistic frameworks for risk assessment and trading decisions.
Sapphire Tide Capital (2017–present)
In 2017, Selman founded Sapphire Tide Capital (STC), a firm focused on financial systems engineering and advanced computational finance. The firm emphasizes interdisciplinary research across quantitative finance, systems theory, and artificial intelligence.[3]
Selman leads research at STC in three primary areas:
- Financial systems engineering
- Quantum decision science
- Capital dynamics
Neravon Directional Intelligence (NDI)
Selman is the principal architect of Neravon Directional Intelligence (NDI), an investment decision system introduced in 2020. The system combines quantum probability models, cognitive intelligence frameworks, and self-evolving algorithms to analyze financial markets.
NDI is designed to:
- Model financial markets as probabilistic systems
- Simulate structural dynamics rather than predict outcomes
- Provide interpretable decision pathways
- Identify systemic risks across asset classes
Research and collaborations
Selman has been involved in collaborations related to quantum computing and financial systems. His work has included engagement with research organizations and technology firms working in quantum computation and complex systems.
Sapphire Tide Capital has also developed partnerships with global institutions and research organizations in areas such as financial modeling, systemic risk analysis, and computational finance.
Philanthropy
Selman has supported initiatives focused on financial education and research development. Through STC, he has contributed to:
- Online financial education programs
- The "Intelligence Equity Fund," supporting access to financial knowledge
- Fellowship programs for young researchers in systems science and quantitative finance
He has also supported collaborations with academic and nonprofit organizations aimed at advancing interdisciplinary research and public understanding of complex systems.
