Samson "Adeola" Odedina (born 21 May 1966), is a versed Nigerian Scientist, Lecturer/Consultant, Farmer, and Administrator who is currently serving as the Executive Council of Ogun State, in office since 12th January, 2020.

Family

Adeola Odedina was born into the family of Pa Titus Adesegun Odedina on 21 May, 1966, Sacred Heart Hospital, Lantoro Abeokuta. Odedina is married to his high school sweetheart Dr. Mrs Joy Nwakaego, they are married with Children.

Education

Adeola Odedina was primarily educated at Lisabi Grammar School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Ogun State from 1979-84, Federal College of Agriculture, Akure from 1984-86, Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan from 1987-89. He holds a Masters degree in Crop Science from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port-Harcourt and Doctor of Philosophy(Ph.D) in Crop Production from the Federal University of Technology Akure, Akure. Odedina also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Agricultural Education from University of Wolverhampton Polytechnic (now Wolverhampton University) United Kingdom. To further re-invigorate and deepen his Agricultural knowledge, he went ahead to obtain a Postgraduate Certificate in Vegetable Science and Technology from Beijing Vegetable Research Centre, Chinain 2000. By year 2001, he went a mile to obtain a Post Ph.D Certificate in Biotechnology from the Brazilian Corporation for Agricultural Research (EMBRAPA)

Early Career

Adeola Odedina entered the service of Federal College of Agriculture Akure on 27th September 1990, he rose to the rank of Chief Lecturer in 2012, Having been a Certified Master Trainer in Agricultural Value Chains from Bern University of Applied Science, Switzerland (June 2015), he consulted for diverse international development projects and institutions

Professional Career & Achievements

His tenure as the Provost of Federal College of Akure (FECA) witnessed numerous, unprecedented and astounding achievements, which is believed by many to have left an indelible legacy, despite some allegations from governing oppositions to soil his reputation, which ofcourse he emerged victorious. During his stay, FECA experienced massive execution of capital projects which has never been witnessed since over 50 years of its inception, he affiliated FECA to some national and international bodies in terms of partnership and funding which help executed most projects with record of zero abandonment.

Odedina currently serves as a Member of International Board of HarvestPlus Solutions, and Consultant Agronomist to HarvestPlus/CIAT Biofortification Project.

His tenacity and track-record of his works earned him a Letter of Commendation, twice from the Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development

After four years of service out of five-year non-renewable tenure at FECA, Odedina succumbed to pressure from his home state, to take up an appointment as the Rector of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta[1]. Despite his short stay, he made meaningful impacts in the institution, leading to several accolades and awards, among which included his induction into the Hall of Fame of Student Union Government of the institution and renaming the Bus Shed after him, and the Award of Excellence given to him for his exemplary role during his tenure[2]

Until his recent appointment as the Executive Council of Ogun State on the 10th of January, 2020, Odedina served briefly as the Special Advisory Committee to the Ogun State Governor from November 2019 to January, 2020. As the Commissioner for Agriculture, Odedina currently oversees an uncommon revolution in the Agricultural Sector of Ogun State, in line with the State Government’s vision of Food Security, Agricultural Industrialization and Employment Generation. In less than one year of assumption of office, landmark achievements have been recorded, this include:

COVID-19 Agricultural Food Security Response Strategy: Flag off of 2020 Planting Season in March 2020 at the onset of the novel COVID-19 Pandemic, Flag Off of 2020 Dry Season Rice Harvest in March 2020 and Wet Season Rice Harvest in August 2020 by State Government supported Youth Farmers Groups both covering over 900hectares; Ogun State Government Free and Improved Planting Materials Palliative Initiative for 40,000 smallholder farmers; Federal Government/Ogun State Government Presidential Fertilizer Palliative for 10,000 smallholder farmers and continued support to Production and Processing Locations in the Food and Farm Sector in Ogun State.

Strengthening of Ogun State Agricultural Linkage Programme; About 70,000 registered interests from Farmers including youths and unemployed graduates[3], in Agricultural Value Chain Programmes cut across Nine (9) Agriculture (Cassava, Maize, Rice, Fishery, Poultry, Cattle, Piggery, Cotton and Oil Palm); 3,500 Cassava beneficiaries have been linked to credit and inputs under the CBN/Ogun State Anchor Borrowers Programme[4]; 394 Maize Farmers, 54 Rice Farmers and 21 Poultry Farmers in Ogun State have benefitted from the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System For Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) [5]through Central Bank of Nigeria; 2,500 Cassava and Rice Farmers have been supported with inputs under the Ogun State Government/Federal Government/IFAD Assisted Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP).

Strategic and Deliberate Partnership with National and International Development Agencies including financial institutions, among which include: African Development Bank (Proposed Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone); World Bank/Ogun State Economic Transformation Project [6](OGSTEP) for 40,000 farmers in Nine (9) priority value chains (cassava, maize, rice, soybean, tomatoes and pepper, sesame, fishery and poultry); Proposed World Bank COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (CARES) Project; Proposed World Bank-Assisted Agro-Processing, Agricultural Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement (APPEALS) Project; EU/GIZ/Federal Government/Lagos State/Ogun State Nigeria Competitiveness Project (NICOP) for 3,000 farmers including youths, in tomato and chilli pepper value chains; International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA); Fan Milk Plc; Central Bank of Nigeria (Cassava 5-Star Programme, Cocoa Development Initiative and Oil Palm Expansion Programme); Federal Government/Ogun State Government/IFAD Assisted Value Chain Development Programme for over 3,000 farmers in Eleven (11) Local Government Areas of Ogun State.

In recognition of the outstanding achievements recorded in the Agricultural Sector, Ogun State recently received an award of outstanding performance from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), in respect to the FGN/IFAD/Ogun State Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) activities in Cassava and Rice Value Chains. In a similar vein, Ogun State received double awards at the Nigeria Agriculture Awards 2020, with His Excellency, Dapo Abiodun, MFR, receiving the Governor of the Year Award[7], while the Ogun State Ministry of Agriculture received Outstanding Performance Award.
