Vishwanath Pandit is an Indian economist and the former vice chancellor of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning. [1]Pandit is currently the chairman of Sri Sathya Sai Centre for Human Values run by Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust. He previously served as Professor of Economics at Delhi School of Economics, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning and has held academic positions at University of Pennsylvania , University of North Carolina, University of Manchester. He is also the recipient of Swami Pranavananda Saraswati UGC National Award in the year 2004.
A former consultant at the World Bank, Pandit has pioneered and significantly contributed to the field of macro economic policy modelling of the India.[1] [2]
Education
Pandit attended the Amar Singh College, University of Kashmir, Srinagar where he obtained B.A.(Mathematics Major). He proceeded to Delhi School of Economics for his post graduation, where he obtained M.A.(Economic Statistics) . He subsequently earned a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania where his doctoral supervisor was the Nobel Laureate Lawrence Klein.
Career
After completing his doctoral research he served as the reader in econometrics at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. During his four-decade long stint at Delhi School of Economics he also served in various capacities like Head - Department of Economics, and Director -Centre for Development Economics. During this period he had held many visiting positions at his alma mater University of Pennsylvania(1984-85) as well as at the University of North Carolina as National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow(1970-71). Pandit also held a visiting faculty position at university of Manchester(1975-76) later also was the Simon Fellow (1976-77) and Hallsworth Fellow(1983-84)[3]
Professor Pandit was a visiting professor at Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning. Later in the year 2001, he was instrumental in setting up the Department of Economics at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning. He went on to take up the role as the 8th Vice Chancellor of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (2008-2010). Under his tenure ship as the Vice Chancellor he was instrumental in organizing the conference, “Conference on Ethics and the World of Finance” (August 28-29, 2009). This conference was held in the aftermath of the Financial crisis of 2007–2008 and was focused on the need for revitalising ethical practises in the financial sector. The participants included top executives from the financial sectors, representatives from regulatory bodies like RBI,SEBI, IRDA, bureaucrats, academicians and many others who are part of the financial echelon of India.[4]
