Virpi Mikkonen (born 1980) is a Finnish journalist, author, recipe developer, stylist, and photographer known for her work in food and wellness.[1] She specializes in healthy food, nutrition, and a natural lifestyle.[2][3]

Early life and education

Mikkonen grew up in Oulu, northern Finland. She became a vegetarian at 14 and later embraced clean eating due to health issues. Mikkonen graduated with a bachelor's degree in social sciences from the University of Tampere's information studies program and completed a wellness coach degree at the New York Wellness Institute.

Career

Mikkonen started her career as a beauty editor for Trendi, one of Finland’s leading lifestyle magazines.[4] She began exploring clean eating due to health issues and eventually shifted her focus to food and wellness. In 2014, she founded her blog, Vanelja, which gained popularity for its wholesome, healthy, gluten-free, dairy-free, and naturally sweetened recipes and healthy lifestyle tips. Her work on Vanelja earned her a Saveur Blog Award.[5]

Mikkonen has authored several internationally published cookbooks on healthy, wholesome recipes catering to various dietary needs.[6] Initially a strict vegan advocate, she published four cookbooks promoting plant-based eating. Her work has been published in six countries.[7] However, after experiencing health setbacks, she was advised by a Chinese medicine specialist to reintroduce animal products into her diet. She now advocates for a balanced and natural approach to food and wellness.[8]

Instagram added Mikkonen's Vanelja Instagram account to its Suggested Users list, amassing over 1,43,000 followers. She creates engaging content, including videos and photos, and collaborates with leading brands in Finland and internationally. Mikkonen has also developed wellness products and provided strategic guidance to companies in services, productization, and social media utilization.[9]
