Urbit Group LLC is an American telecommunications company headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.[1] The company is best known for creating and patenting the first self-powered wireless IoT gateway – The Urb-IoT Gateway. Urbit is an official partner of Iridium LLC (NASDAQ: IRDM) and the LoRa Alliance.[2][3]
History
Urbit Group was established in 2011 by three entrepreneurial brothers: Joaquin, Erika and Mariana Patron. Urbit has gained recognition for revolutionizing the IoT industry by offering bespoke IoT solutions for a diverse range of industries be it Agriculture, Fintech, Transportation & Logistics, Oil & gas, Utilities, or Animal monitoring. Urbit’s idea is to create a platform to connect various types of sensors from the Internet of Things (IoT) and make their data reach the cloud seamlessly transforming the data form those sensors into actionable information for monitoring and decision making. The idea is to leverage the global connections between remote objects and the cloud to improve the decision-making capabilities for the users.
Since its inception, Urbit has partnered with a number of global companies such as Carvagan Tech, Pessl Instruments Metos, Gsat Track, WITRAC, Enginko, Monterrey Technological Institute and Moonsyst to name a few.
Products and services
The Urbit wireless and portable device ensure global, flexible and scalable deployment of wired and wireless IoT objects. It comes with a number of features such as multiple backhaul connectivity, edge processing, cloud connectivity, long battery life, and API integration.
The Urb-IoT supports Satellite backup for mission critical applications and is useful for low data frequency and small data messages. On the other hand the Urb-IoT Pro supports Satellite main link and is useful for high data frequency and large data messages.
The company is currently working on its third product – Urbit Fintech. This is a gateway intended exclusively for financial transactions and inclusion. Through a highly secure and stable connectivity, this solution will provide POS and ATM connectivity, allowing electronic transactions to take place even in remote regions without cellular services or electrical power.
Awards
Urbit Group received from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the ITU Digital World SME Award in 2021 for its new technology to enhance and increase access to the economy for the banked and unbanked.
Their simple and unique wireless solution aims to enable financial inclusion to places with no telco or electricity infrastructure.

Urbit Group is a member of LoRa Alliance, one of the fastest-growing open and non-profit alliances in the wireless technology sector.
