University of Maryland, Baltimore
The University of Maryland at Baltimore, more often referred to as UMB, is a public institution located in Baltimore, Maryland. It was established in 1807, making it one of the oldest institutions in the United States for dentistry, law, medicine, pharmacy, social work, and nursing. Additionally, it is home to some of the oldest professional schools in the world for social work and nursing. It is the first campus to be established in the University System of Maryland and maintains a collaborative relationship with the University of Maryland at College Park. It is a part of the University System of Maryland and is situated on the western edge of downtown Baltimore on 71 acres (242,811 m2) of land. Through teaching, research, clinical care, and community service, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) seeks to advance the human condition and contribute to the general welfare of the state of Maryland as well as to society as a whole.
The University of Maryland, Baltimore and the University of Maryland, College Park, which is considered to be the state's flagship university, joined forces in 2012 under the MPowering the State project in order to pool their resources and capitalise on their respective advantages. The University of Maryland Strategic Partnership Act of 2016 gave the partnership its official stamp of approval, recognising its achievements in developing more forward-thinking educational, scientific, and medical programmes in Baltimore, as well as its receipt of increased research grants and joint faculty appointments.
According to the National Science Foundation, the university placed 14th overall in the country and 8th among all public institutions in terms of the total amount of money spent on research and development in 2019. This spending was $1.1 billion. According to data from the College Scorecard that was made public by the United States Department of Education in 2018, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) was rated number one in the state of Maryland and fifteenth in the nation in terms of the average pay of its graduates.
Initially established in 1807 as the Maryland College of Medicine, the institution that is now known as the University of Maryland, Baltimore was originally named. In the year 1812, it was rechartered as the University of Maryland and granted the right to create new faculties in the areas of law, religion, as well as the arts and sciences.
