The University of Bucharest, also known by its abbreviation UB in Romania, is a public university that was established on July 4, 1864, 158 years ago, by a decree issued by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza to convert the previous Princely Academy into the current University of Bucharest. As a result, the University of Bucharest is the second oldest modern university in Romania. The Universitaria Consortium counts it as one of its five participating institutions (the group of elite Romanian universities).

The Romanian Ministry of Education recognises the Institution of Bucharest as an advanced research and education university, and the university's academic programmes are available in both Romanian and English. It was one of four institutions in Romania to be listed in the top 700 universities in the world according to the QS World University Rankings for the year 2012.

Alexandru Ioan Cuza issued Decree no. 765 on July 4, 1864, which established the University of Bucharest. Today, the University of Bucharest is a preeminent academic centre and an important point of reference in society.

The University of Bucharest was ranked among the top 601-701 universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings in 2012. This achievement was shared by three other institutions located in Romania, including Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca and Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iași.

The University of Bucharest was presented with both the National Academic Excellence Diploma from the year 2000 and the National Academic Excellence Medal from the year 2004. The university's degrees and diplomas, both undergraduate and graduate, are all recognised on a global scale.
