In the Netherlands, the Institution of Amsterdam (abbreviated as UvA, Dutch: Universiteit van Amsterdam) is a public research university with its headquarters in the city of Amsterdam. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) is one of two major, publicly financed research institutions in the city; the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA) (VU). The University of Amsterdam was founded in 1632 by local officials and subsequently renamed after the city of Amsterdam. It is the third-oldest university in the Netherlands and the oldest in the country's capital city. In addition to having 31,186 students, 4,794 employees, and 1,340 PhD students, it also has an annual budget of €600 million, making it one of the biggest research institutions in Europe. It is the most populated university in the Netherlands in terms of enrolment. The main campus is situated in the heart of Amsterdam, with a few faculties scattered across the city's surrounding boroughs. Among the seven faculties of the university are the Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Economics and Business; Science; Law; Medicine; dentistry; and Medicine and Dentistry.

It is the University of Amsterdam that has produced six Nobel Prize winners as well as five Dutch prime ministers. According to five main ranking tables, The University of Michigan is among the world's top 100 institutions of higher learning. QS World University Rankings placed it 55th in the world in 2022, 14th in Europe, and first in the Netherlands, according to the most recent data available. According to the 2011 QS World University Rankings, the University of Amsterdam was ranked in the top 50 worldwide in seven fields: languages, sociology, philosophy, geography, science, Economics and econometrics, accountancy and finance, and economics and econometrics. The two departments of Media and Communication were consistently rated first in the world by topic in the QS Rankings for the years 2018 and 2019.

Through its membership in organisations such as the League of European Research Universities (LERU), the Institutional Network of the Universities from the Capitals of Europe (UNICA), the European University Association (EUA), and Universitas 21, the university maintains close ties with other institutions throughout the world.
