Ungoogled-chromium
Ungoogled-chromium is a free and open-source Chromium-based web browser with the aim of increasing privacy. The developers behind the project describe it as "Google Chromium, sans dependency on Google web services".[1] [2] Unlike many Chromium-based browsers, ungoogled-chromium tries to retain the default Chromium experience.
Features
Ungoogled-chromium adds a few key features that aim to increase privacy.
- Disabling functionality that require Google domains, including Google Safe Browsing.
- Replacing Google web domains in the Chromium source code with non-existent web domains, and also blocking internal requests to those domains.
- binaries from the Chromium source code and replacing them with custom alternatives.
The browser also adds smaller non-essential features and borrows features from other projects such as Debian. Some Chromium features do not work on ungoogled-chromium, a notable one being installing extensions directly from the Chrome Web Store.
Installation
Ungoogled-chromium provides binary downloads on their GitHub, but many choose to build from source as these binaries are user-submitted and unverified. Instructions for this are provided, but building from source can take a significant amount of time.
Reception and history
In a review, Techspot called ungoogled chromium Google Chromium without dependency on Google web services, plus better privacy, control and transparency.[3]
History of Chromium open-source project, and differences between Chrome and Chromium (needs expansion).[4][5][6]
In January 2021, Google announced it will be removing access to its APIs from open-source versions of Chromium browser.[7] Jack Wallen of Tech Republic said this could be an opportunity for developers to provide similar services independent of Google.[8]
