Tsizin Grigory Ilyich (Russian: Григорий Ильич Цизин; born 31 March 1957) – scientist, analytical chemist, winner of the V. A. Koptyug Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Honored researcher of the Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Biography

Tsizin Grigory Ilyich was born on March 31, 1957 in Moscow. In 1973, he graduated from the mathematical school №7. And at the same time, he attended his mathematical classes held in the main building of Moscow State University. After graduating from the high school, he entered the Moscow State University at the Department of Chemistry.

Being the second-year student, he joined the laboratory of Analytical Chemistry, where, under the leadership of E. K. Ivanova and her colleagues from Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, he completed his coursework related to the determination of manganese in seawater.

During the last years of education, G. I. Tsizin prepared a graduate work under the supervisor of T. N. Shekhovtsova. He also met Yu. A. Zolotov, who invited him to work at the Institute of Geochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the laboratory of concentration as a researcher. Grigory Ilyich Tsizin had been working at this Institute for 11 years and defended his candidate dissertation there in 1986..[1].

In 1990, Tsizin Grigory Ilyich returned to the Department of Chemistry of MSU, where he prepared and defended his doctoral dissertation «Dynamic sorption concentration of trace elements in inorganic analysis»[2].

Scientific activity

The scientific activity of Tsizin Grigory Ilyich is diverse and related to the development of systems for dynamic sorption concentration of substances for chemical analysis[3].

In the 80s and 90s G. I. Tsizin investigated the mutual influence of elements during co-deposition[4] with inorganic sediments. He also has been engaged in the development of effective organopolymer sorbents[5] for the dynamic concentration of elements and some toxic organic substances, as well as highly sensitive flow sorption spectroscopy and sorption-HPLC methods for the analysis of different types of water, soils and foodstuffs. Grigory Ilyich was awarded with the V. A. Koptyug Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences for his research cycle «Development of a general methodology for monitoring the chemical composition of environmental objects and the creation of a complex of highly sensitive methods for water analysis». Another important achievement of Grigory Ilyich Tsizin’s work is the method he developed for concentrating substances in dynamic conditions in the form of nonequilibrium forms[6]. Thus, this method provides, for example, rapid concentration of platinum group metals from solutions of complex composition (obtained after decomposition of ores and rockprs). Grigory Ilyich Tsizin proposed the method of using water in a subcritical state in schemes of sorption-HPLC analysis of water[7], as well as the original procedures for concentrating and separation of hydrophilic phosphorus-containing substances on porous graphitized carbon have been offered[8] G. I. Tsizin heads the scientific group of the concentration laboratory of the Moscow State University Department of Analytical Chemistry, where he investigated various aspects of dynamic sorption concentration of substances[9]. The theoretical foundation of that method was developed, and the criteria for the effectiveness of dynamic sorption systems were formulated. In cooperation with Russian companies, new equipment has been presented for the flow sorption spectroscopic and sorption-HPLC determination of substances in solutions[10] Grigory Ilych Tsizin is the author of 2 monographs[11], more than 250 scientific articles and 8 patents. In 1995, G. I. Tsizin became a member of Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences for Analytical Chemistry, and since 2013 he has been Deputy Chairman of this Council, the head of its Central Department, and co—head of the commission on Separation and Concentration methods. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Analytical Chemistry.

Teaching activities

Currently, Grigory Ilyich Tsizin gives lectures on modern methods of chemical analysis for masters of the Baku branch of Moscow State University. He also supervises writing course papers, theses, and post-gradate studies. A total number of term papers and theses were prepared and defended under the supervision of G. I. Tsizin is 30.

Awards

  • MAIK/Interperiodica Award for the best publication (2002)
  • V. A. Koptyug Award of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2014)
  • Diploma of the Honored Researcher of Moscow State University (2018)

Family

Grigory Ilyich Tsizin is married and he is the father of four children.

Hobbies

Grigory Ilyich Tsizin has been a big fan of hiking since his school years. Since the 9th grade he has got interested in mountain tourism, graduated from school of mountain tourism instructors. Later he became involved in kayaking, he also likes rafting on many rivers of the Moscow region, Karelia, Arkhangelsk region, the Urals, the Caucasus, and other regions very much.
