Early Life

Tony El Ghazal was born & raised in Qatar, where he spent most his life.

Education

Tony El Ghazal earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication & a minor in Theatre from Northwestern University in Qatar, part of the Qatar Foundation[2]. He graduated Summa Cum Laude[3] and was awarded the Student Leadership Award in 2021[4] . During his time in college, El Ghazal was awarded a Media & Research Award for a short video profile on La La Land's producer, Jordan Horowitz [5], and two Studio 20Q production grants to create two of his films.

The Artist: Yacoub Missi

The Artist: Yacoub Missi is a biographical film featuring an interview with Syrian artist Yacoub Missi[6]. The film was screened as part of the 2019 edition of Ajyal Film Festival in Qatar (formerly known as Doha Tribeca Film Festival) [7] and the 2020 edition of MESA Film Festival.

Ana Bas

Ana Bas is a short music documentary co-directed by Tony El Ghazal & Ayah Awartani that document's Egyptian rapper, MVRS, as he plans a release event for his newest album, "Summer Stories"[8]. The film screened as part of the Made in Qatar category at Ajyal Film Festival 2019 [9].

Atlal (Remnants)

Atlal (also known as Remnants) is a fictional documentary that tells the stories of three monumental buildings in the history of Qatar: Qatar Preparatory School, Doha Club, Gulf Cinema[10]. Told from the perspective of a Palestinians|Palestinian expat (played by Abdelghani Maqboul) who lived his entire life in Qatar, the film shows how these three monumental buildings look like today as they lay abandoned[11]. The stories of the abandoned buildings are told through the protagonists's memories and using archival materials [12]. According to El Ghazal, who co-directed the film with Balkees Al-Jaafari, the film was shot amidst the COVID-19 pandemic making it much more difficult to be able to complete production. The film reflects El Ghazal & Al-Jaafari's belonging to Qatar after living there for many years [13]. Atlal's world premiere was during Ajyal Film Festival 2021, under the Made in Qatar category[14].

Bayt El Omor

Bayt El Omor is a narrative short written & directed by Tony El Ghazal[2]. The film was awarded a Studio 20Q grant and screened during the opening of M7 Qatar [15]

Ibn El Ballad

Ibn El Ballad (also known as Firas Fits In) is a narrative short that tackles the struggles of being a cross culture kid.[3]. It was written, directed & edited by Tony El Ghazal. The film was conceptualized & completed during the COVID-19 pandemic. El Ghazal had to direct remotely on Zoom (software)|Zoom for some of the filming days. The film was a recipient of a Studio 20Q grant and was screened at M7 Qatar [15]

Corporate/Promotional Films

In addition to narrative films, El Ghazal has also directed several advertisements for clients such as Al Ahli Hospital and Ehsan which ended up on Qatar Television.
