Timothy Bates (born August 5, 1973) is an American politician currently serving as a Council Member, seat 1 for the Clermont, Florida in Lake County, Florida. Timothy Bates has served as a Clermont Council Member since 2012. Bates is also the owner of a Home medical equipment.[1]company.
Early life, education, and personal life
Bates was born in Birmingham, Alabama and raised in Orlando, Florida . He is the son of Timothy and Karen Bates. Bates was 23 years old, when he became an entrepreneur and started his first company. Bates played baseball and graduated from Dr. Phillips High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Men’s Tennis team 1995-1997 [2].
Bates is married to Kimberly (Bonaventura) Bates, an NCAA Division I and Southeastern Conference gymnastics champion from the University of Alabama[3]. They reside in Clermont, FL with their two children.
Political Career
Bates first ran for office in 2012 for an open seat being vacated by Jack Hogan on the Clermont City Council. The entrepreneur defeated three others that were vying for the same seat during the primary that was held in August of 2012. He defeated Tim Murry, Thomas Spencer and Cuqui Whitehead. The top two with the most votes moved on to the general election that was held in November of 2012. Bates was able to earn the most votes, defeating Tim Murry and was elected to serve a two year term to the Clermont City Council. Bates was subsequently reelected to the Clermont City Council in 2014, 2016, 2018[4] without opposition, until he had an opponent in 2020. Joa Macnaile challenged Bates for the seat he had held for 8 years. His challenger fell short during the November 2020 general election. Bates was re-elected with 69% of the votes [5]
While serving the Clermont City Council, Bates served on the Lake County League of Cities board (2012-current), Florida League of Cities Growth Management & Economic Development Legislative Policy Committee (2016-2017)[6], Lake County Water Safety Advisory Committee vice chair (2015-2016)[7]. Bates was appointed as Clermont’s Mayor-Pro Tem (2018-2019).
