Tim Nijsmans is a Belgian financial adviser, author and lecturer. He is the founder of financial consultancy Vermogensgids and a lecturer in private banking at Arteveldehogeschool in Ghent. He previously worked in private banking and investment management, including more than a decade at Dierickx Leys Private Bank.[1]
Nijsmans is co-author of the book De Hangmatbelegger, written with Yoran Brondsema. The book focuses on long-term and relatively passive approaches to investing. According to published accounts, the book sold more than 40,000 copies. In 2024, "hangmatbeleggen", a term associated with the book's investment approach, was selected as the Flemish Word of the Year by Van Dale.[2]
Education
Nijsmans studied commercial sciences at Lessius Hogeschool Antwerpen, graduating with a master's degree. His thesis focused on behavioral finance.
He later completed a postgraduate programme in Accountancy & Finance at EHSAL Management School, including modules in investment advising and financial accounting. He also studied estate and inheritance planning at Universiteit Antwerpen Management School.
From 2011 to 2013, he completed an Executive Master in Personal Financial Planning at Antwerp Management School, graduating with distinction.
Career
Nijsmans began his professional career in the financial sector in the early 2000s. He worked at AOT België as a market maker in equity options before joining Fortis Investments, where he was involved in data control and analysis. He subsequently worked at Fortis Bank Insurance, where his responsibilities included control and reporting related to mutual funds.
In 2005, Nijsmans joined Dierickx Leys Private Bank as a trader, working with equities, bonds, options, derivatives and investment funds. From 2006 to 2019, he worked as a portfolio and fund manager at the bank. His responsibilities included portfolio management, asset allocation, investment strategy and contact with private banking clients. He also participated in the bank's investment committee and was responsible for the DBI Equity Fund.[3]
In March 2019, Nijsmans founded Vermogensgids, a financial consultancy focused on investment analysis and education for private investors. The company provides independent guidance concerning investment portfolios, with attention to costs, risk and returns.[4]
Since November 2020, Nijsmans has taught private banking at Arteveldehogeschool in Ghent, where he teaches third-year bachelor's students in the field of business and management.
Writing and investing education
Nijsmans is the co-author of De Hangmatbelegger, which he wrote with Yoran Brondsema. The book presents an approach to investing based on long-term portfolio management and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
Nijsmans also gives lectures, webinars and training sessions concerning investing, financial markets and ETFs. He has been associated with the Vlaamse Federatie van Beleggers (VFB), a Belgian non-profit organisation focused on investor education.[5]
His subsequent book, Hangmatbeleggen voor het leven, co-written with Brondsema, was announced for publication in 2026.[6]
