Tim Martin (born September 30, 1986) is an American basketball coach, motivational speaker, filmmaker, and industry expert.[1] As a professional basketball trainer, Martin is known for creating comprehensive training transformation programs for basketball players at all levels. Throughout his career, he is known to have trained some of the most elite players, including Trae Young, Rudy Gobert, Dwyane Wade, and Myles Turner. Martin has also overcome homelessness with his son for 3 years in 2013-2016.[2]

Martin is also the director of Basketball Relations for the Dwyane Wade sneaker company, Way of Wade/Li Ning. He is a keynote speaker at various coaching clinics and conferences in China, the US, South Korea, Africa, and France.[3]

Early life and education

Martin was born in Arlington, Texas, the son of Rodney Gee and Vanessa martin. He spent his early years travelling with his mother throughout Texas and the southwest. He grew up in a foster home before moving to Hawaii with his mother. Martin attended eleven different schools over twelve years and lived in six states during his formative years. He sustained an ankle injury while playing in JUCO. Later, he returned to Texas and met his father.

Career

Martin began his career in Dallas as a basketball trainer for former Mavericks Josh Howard and Devin Harris. He started instructing players of all ages.[4]

In 2015, one of Martin's players, Jawun Evans, was selected as a McDonald's All-American, which brought him prominence and popularity as a trainer. Martin has instructed players of all ages over the years. Martin has taught renowned talents, including Victor Wembanyama, Trae Young, Rudy Gobert, Dwyane Wade, and Myles Turner, and is currently working with upcoming stars such as PJ Washington, Tyrese Maxey, and others.[5]

From 2010 through 2017, Martin cultivated ties throughout the NBA, worked with the Texas Legends G-League team, and collaborated with several NBA players. In 2016, he became the youngest head coach in the NIKE EYBL summer circuit and, over three years, developed over eight McDonald's All-Americans who went on to the NBA. In addition, he has been to nations such as China, the United States, South Korea, Africa, and France to conduct training camps, develop training curricula, and speak at several coaching clinics and conferences. Martin offers various virtual and in-person training courses, including ball handling, shooting, passing, defense, mental health, and IQ development.[6]

Martin has developed "The Beautiful Struggle," a non-profit organization that sells sportswear that promotes optimism and hope and reminds you constantly to overcome obstacles. Martin also offers Tim Martin Player Development t-shirts and hoodies. The sales proceeds benefit local mental health institutions and the homeless population in Dallas, Texas.[7]

Martin created a documentary showcasing his years of hardship. The first part of the documentary, "The Beautiful Struggle," was released in 2013. The moniker helped promote his firm and created the tone for his brand. Martin is also the director of Basketball Relations for Way of Wade/Li Ning, the sneaker company founded by Dwyane Wade.[8]
