The Humane Society of New York (HSNY) is a non-profit organization established in 1904, dedicated to the welfare of animals in New York City. It is based in NYC and primarily focuses on issues related to pets and animals.[1]
History
The Humane Society of New York (HSNY) was founded in 1904 with a mission to improve the lives of working horses in New York City. They advocated for laws against animal cruelty, lobbied for the installation of water troughs in public spaces, and provided necessary care to these hardworking animals. Over time, their scope expanded to include all animals in need, and they established a free veterinary clinic and a small adoption center for cats and dogs.
Today, the HSNY operates a full-service veterinary hospital and the Vladimir Horowitz and Wanda Toscanini Horowitz Adoption Center, serving over 30,000 dogs and cats annually. They prioritize animal welfare, ensuring both physical and emotional well-being, and provide a range of services to achieve their mission.
Services
The HSNY offers several services aimed at improving animal welfare:
Veterinary Care:
- The HSNY operates a full-service veterinary hospital, providing affordable care for pet owners with limited means.
- Services include wellness exams, vaccinations, blood tests, diagnostics like X-rays and ultrasounds, and both basic and advanced surgical procedures.
- The Animal Emergency Appeal program covers complete veterinary costs for qualified animals in need.
Adoption:
- The Vladimir Horowitz and Wanda Toscanini Horowitz Adoption Center houses cats and dogs seeking permanent homes.
- All adoption animals receive complete medical care – whatever medical care they might need, including: vaccinations, spay or neuter, all necessary blood tests are performed, tested for parasites and treated, microchipped, etc. before adoption.
- Dogs are evaluated and receive training under the guidance of the Society’s Director of Animal Behaviour and Training
- Potential adopters are carefully screened to ensure the animal is placed in just the right safe and loving home.
Additional Services:
- The HSNY also advocates for animal welfare through public education and policy initiatives.
