Dr. Thangjam Dhabali Singh (or Dhabali Singh Thangjam) is an Indian pathologist, entrepreneur and the managing director of BABINA Healthcare and Hospitality Industries Pvt Ltd.[1] A post-graduate in Pathology, he founded BABINA Diagnostics in 1983 in the capital city of Imphal in Manipur.[2] BABINA Diagnostics got accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories|National accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) in 2007.[3] Dr. Thangjam Dhabali Singh promoted The Classic Hotel in 2009, the first three-star category hotel in Manipur.[4] He also promoted BABINA Specialty Hospital, a cancer hopsital in 2020 in collaboration with American Oncology Institute.[5] He is the recipient of the Northeast Excellence Award 2010 presented by DoNER (Ministry of Department of Development of North Eastern Region) and 2020 Spring Decoration "Order of the Rising Sun|Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays" presented by the government of Japan for his contribution to strengthening the ties between Japan and India, and Japan and Manipur.[6][7]

Biography

Thangjam Dhabali Singh was born in Imphal on 1st January 1956. He is the fifth among ten siblings in the family. He completed his MBBS degree from Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) (the erstwhile RMC) in the year 1977. He secured his post-graduation (MD) in Pathology from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research|Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh in 1982 and started his career as a senior resident there in the Department of Pathology. After serving at PGIMER for a few years, he joined RIMS, Imphal as a teaching faculty member. He voluntarily retired from service as associate professor in the Department of Pathology in Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal in 1994. Since then, he has been working fulltime as laboratory director of BABINA Diagnostics.[8]

Dr Thangjam Dhabali Singh formed the company, BABINA Healthcare and Hospitality Industries Pvt. Ltd. in 2007 with BABINA Diagnostics and The Classic Hotel operating as its separate units, the later catering exclusively to hospitality sector. At present, the company employs around 1000 staff in both its healthcare and hospitality units.

Thangjam Dhabali Singh is a member of Rotary International|Rotary (worked in different capacities as secretary, vice president, president, director, chairman of Rotary Club of Imphal and district secretary general and assistant governor of Rotary District 3240), Indian Medical Association (IMA) (vice president, Manipur State Chapter), Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists (IAPM (worked as secretary, vice president and president of NE Chapter), Indian Association of Cytologists, NE Diabetes Society. Besides these, he is also patron member of Manipur Orthopaedic Society, secretary, Manipur Forum of Pathologists and Microbiologists. Married to Dr. Rita Sanjenbam, professor in the Department of Pharmacology, RIMS, he is blessed with three children. The eldest, a daughter, is a qualified pathologist and one of his sons is a postgraduate in medicine (radiodiagnosis) and is consultant radiologist in BABINA Diagnostics. The youngest, a hotel management graduate, is presently working as the director of The Classic Hotel.

Thangjam Dhabali Singh is the founding President of Manipur Tourism Forum (MTF), an organisation involved in the promotion of tourism in Manipur. Manipur Tourism Forum in partnership with 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation has been organising 2nd World War anniversary functions in Imphal every year.[9] It was under MTF's initiative that the construction of the Imphal Peace Museum was carried out with active support from Nippon Foundation|Nippon Foundation and Sasakawa Peace Foundation.[10]
